Winter Oil Painting Attrib. to George Inness Hartley, of two famous art families

1930’s

About the Item

This unusual winter painting is signed lower right “G I Hartley”. It is well done for the subject matter and time period. Research has lead me to believe that the artist is George Inness Hartley, the son of famous American sculptor Jonathan Scott Hartley (1845-1912) and Helen Inness, the daughter of famous Hudson River painter George Inness (1825-1894). Son George Inness Hartley was born in 1887 in New York and educated at Cornell. He was known as a writer and scientist as well as serving in the military as a Captain during World War I. Living early in life in Manhattan, the extended family located to the edge of Southampton on Long Island in the early 20th century. While not known particularly as an artist himself, he had siblings that carried on the artistic traditions of their more famous ancestors, so it is not too far a stretch to believe that son George may have also painted. The colorful work shows a snow covered flat landscape with icy but open waters. Perhaps it is Long Island Sound. Birds or ducks are shown along the shore, in the water and flying in the distant sky. It appears that the sun is shining through clouds and hitting the center inlet at the open break of land. The painting appears to date to the 1930’s and as such is bright, colorful and somewhat modern in approach. At 18” x 24” oil on canvas, the work is signed lower right. It is housed in a complimentary period gold painted frame with some subtle relief design. Overall framed measurements are 23 1/2” x 29 1/2”. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition with no real issues to report. The composition, light and painting techniques of this work point to an artist with a somewhat trained background. It’s a unique scene that draws one’s eye and interest to study and contemplate it further.
