Maurice Van Felix
Vintage Florida Water Scene Oil Painting by Listed Artist Maurice Van Felix

ca 1950

About the Item

This is a colorful oil painting by listed American artist Maurice Van Felix. It portrays a boat landing or lift along a harbor location. It must be Florida as there is a line of palm trees in the background and the light is very bright. The reflections in the water are nicely rendered and the color palette is varied and pleasing. It is signed lower right. Maurice Van Felix was born in Poland in 1889 and came to the United States in 1920. He settled near Atlantic City and painted many local scenes. He must have had some connection to Florida as this painting includes its original exhibition label from the St. Augustine Art Association. Given the age from the back of the painting and the label, the painting likely dates to the 1940’s or early 1950’s. The oil on canvas measures 16” x 20” and is in very good cleaned condition. There are no visible repairs, from the front or back. It is housed in a wide gold frame that measures 22” x 26” overall. The frame has minor chips here and there, mostly around the outer edges. A bonus is an old biography sheet of the artist that is adhered to the back of the canvas. This painting would work well in a collection of Florida paintings or a fine art collection in general.
