Cadart, 56, Bard. Haussman, Paris A deluxe impression with masked letters The Prud’hom painting is in the Musée des Beaux-AÉdouard Joseph Dantan was born on 26 August 1848 in Paris. His grandfather, who had fought in the Napoleonic Wars, was a wood sculptor. His father, Antoine Laurent Dantan, and uncle, Jean-Pierre Dantan, were both well-known sculptors.[1] Dantan was a pupil of Isidore Pils and Henri Lehmann at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.[2] At the age of nineteen he won a commission for a large mural painting of The Holy Trinity for the Hospice Brezin at Marne (Seine-et-Oise).[3] Dantan's first exhibit at the Paris Salon was An Episode in the Destruction of Pompeii in 1869. In 1870 the Franco-Prussian War interrupted his work, and he enlisted in the defence force.[4] He was given the rank of a sergeant, and was later promoted to lieutenant.[5] During the war the family home was burned down.[4] In the years after the war Dantan exhibited a number of other paintings at the Salon including Hercules at the Feet of Omphale (1874), Death of Tusaphane (1875), The Nymph Salmacis (1876), Priam Demanding of Achillees the Body of Hector (1877), Calling of the Apostles Peter and Andrew (1878), Corner of a Studio (1880) and The Breakfast of the Model (1881).[3] He continued to exhibit at the Salon until 1895. In 1890, 1894 and 1895 he served on the jury of the Salon. For twelve years Dantan's companion was the model Agostina Segatori, who had also posed for artists such as Jean-Baptiste Corot, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Eugène Delacroix and Édouard Manet. She bore a child to Dantan, Jean-Pierre, in 1873. On their separation, Agostina opened Café du Tambourin on the Boulevard de Clichy that became a meeting place for artists.[6][fn 1] Dantan spent his summers in Villerville, where he died on 9 July 1897 when the carriage in which he was riding crashed violently into the village church.[8] Style and reception Coin d'atelier (1880) At the 1870 exposition of the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts Dantan received an honorable mention for his submission for the prix de Rome.[9] In 1874 he won a third class medal for his painting of a monk carving a Christ in wood...

Large early 20th century French oil on canvas of tulips displayed in a confit jar. Signed Jean Julien to the bottom left and presented in a period frame. A rather charming and romantic impression of a tulip display. The colour palette is soft and gentle, light and airy and the artist has managed to impart to the whole painting a chalky texture which gives the impression of soft focus. The tulips are delicately painted but with great precision and attention to detail. The artist has thought carefully about both the scale and the shape of the image. The elongated rectangle is a perfect fit for the long ranging tulip stems. A thoroughly charming painting. Jean Pierre Louis Joseph Julien was a French painter born in Marseille on the 12th of May 1888. Julien was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, friend of Marcel Pagnol, Fernandel, Raimu and Tino Rossi. Guy Dornand called him “the ambassador of Provence in Paris”. Between the wars, he stayed in Italy, travelled to North Africa and designed posters for tourism, murals and theatre sets, while remaining faithful to his hometown. He was a member of the 'Association des Marseillais de Paris.' along with his colleague Auguste Durand-Rosé. In 1933 Emmanuel Pontremoli, director of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts proposed a design project for a school in Rue Saint-Martin, Paris. Several artists were given the chance to compete for this opportunity. Jean Julien impressed and was given the task. Julien taught at the School of Fine Arts in Paris and was also a drawing teacher at the Polytechnic School. Jean Julien died in Sanary-sur-Mer on the 5th of September 1974.

This elegant romanticist oil on burlap painting was realized by an unheralded master during the first part of the 20th century. Realized in tight, yet expressionistic brush strokes, the painting depicts a nude male figure in the foreground with his back turned towards the viewer. The man has one knee raised (perhaps grounded on a boulder) and an arm extended into the abstract background whose frenetic white stroked and blocks of mossy greens suggests a frothing river. He sits on a large river stone in a rich olive hue clutching a white towel in his right hand that supports the weight of his body. The figure's torqued position serves to highlight his muscular physique- whose ideal proportions recalls classical Greek sculpture. In the bottom right portion of the composition, there is an abstracted form in a sumptuous brick red that offers an understated pop of color that provides a dynamic contrast to the flesh tones, organic greens and flaxen hues of the figure's hair. This beautiful 19th century framed engraving "The Fighting Temeraire" by James Tibbetts Willmore is based on an original painting by the renowned British artist J.M.W. Turner. It was published by James S. Virtue & Co. in London between 1859-1875. It depicts the once mighty British warship the HMS Temeraire being towed away down the river Thames by a much smaller steamboat to a ship-breaking yard to be broken up for scrap. The Temeraire was first launched in 1798 and represented the pinnacle of British ship-building. 180-feet long, constructed of English oak and armed with 98 guns, she was one of the largest warships of the period. The Temeraire became a symbol of British pride and military power that endured throughout the 19th century. The man-of-war served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and was among the last serving ships to have been at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. It became one of the many older ships put out of service in the 1830s and 1840s. The once mighty and feared ship symbolizes a once magnificent, but now obsolete, technology. Turner seems to lament her inglorious final journey, being towed by a less magnificent, but modern steam powered tugboat. The Turner painting was created in 1838 and is now held in the National Gallery in London. Willmore's engraving, created in 1859, captures the dramatic scene with great detail and skill. The image has become an iconic representation of the decline of Britain's naval power and the transition from sail to steam in the 19th century. The sunset in the background is symbolic of the sun going down on British naval power and tradition. The painting conveys profound and diverse themes that are central to the human experience: those of mortality and change, technology and progress, heroism and brutality.
