18th Century Spanish Arab Style Copper Water / Milk Jug with Decorative Seam
Located in Madrid, ES
Copper containers of varying shapes and sizes have been used in Spanish homes and kitchens for many centuries. Copper and its alloys were particularly popular metals for storing and preparing foodstuffs, not only because they were durable, but because these metals exhibited natural antibacterial properties. This particular jug, most likely made for the storage and serving of liquids such as water or milk, exhibits strong Hispano-Moresque influences. The baluster shape, subtle geometric patterns on the neck, and fitted, domed lid all reference Spanish Arab...

Antique Iranian Kalamkari Prayer Mat
Located in London, GB
Antique Iranian Kalamkari prayer mat
Persian, Late 19th Century
Height 128cm, width 92cm
Crafted in the late 19th century by skilled Iranian craftsmen, this cotton prayer mat features a plethora of religious and nature-inspired motifs.
Its surface is adorned with a selection of patterns and motifs created using the traditional woodblock printing technique called kalamkari (or Qalamkari). The 400 years old technique originating from Isfahan, utilises only natural and local materials, celebrating and supporting the local communities.
A selection of repetitive, organic motifs adorns the cotton textile. The patterns are coloured in various shades of red, cream, and blue, their design inspired by religious Islamic architecture, in particular that of a mosque. The central prayer niche (also called a mihrab) is identical in shape to that of the arch-shaped prayer niches found in mosques. Arabic markings feature above it.
This Persian prayer mat...

Large Viennese Cold-Painted Bronze Lamp of a Mandolin Player by Bergman
Located in London, GB
Large Viennese cold-painted bronze lamp of a mandolin player by Bergman
Austrian, c. 1910
Height 39cm, width 15cm, depth 15cm
Crafted around 1910 by Franz Xaver Bergman (Austrian, 1861-1936), this Orientalist sculptural lamp depicts a young woman playing a mandolin and singing. She is sitting on a green cushioned seat while beneath her feet is a polychrome patterned rug draped on two steps. Dressed in typical Orientalist clothing, her beautifully executed facial expression suggests she is in a joyful mood.
Above the main figure is a domed canopy. Its construction includes a pierced window draped by a striped red and gold curtain. A gold shield and a flag also hang on the construction. The domed cover is superbly decorated with trefoil windows filled with coloured glass and is surmounted by a crescent moon which is an important symbol of Islam. A similar motif can also be observed on the flagpole.
The lamp is stamped with a ‘B’ in an urn-shaped cartouche, ‘GESCH’ as well as ‘3’.
The cold-painting technique has been superbly used to highlight even the smallest details of the scene, such as the patterns on the rug or the texture of the seat.
An almost identical example is featured in Joseph Zobel, Antique Vienna Bronzes...

Moorish mosaic Marquetry wear consistent with age and use, one tiny piece missing on the inside corner, not visible when the box is closed.
Great Islamic Art collector museum quality piece on this miniature painting on boxes.
Anglo Indian Moorish style micro mosaic inlaid jewelry box with lid. Intricate inlaid Anglo Indian box with geometric Moorish Sadeli design in an rectangular shape form with micro mosaic marquetry, very fine artwork. Museum collector piece like the one in Doris Duke Islamic Art Museum. The repeating geometric patterns of Sadeli Mosaic are what give it beauty and richness. This decorative technique is a type of micro mosaic featuring repeating geometric patterns. A highly skilled craft, it has had a long history in India and the Middle East with early examples dating back to the 16th century. In the 1800s, it became popular as a decoration on a variety of boxes, card cases, and chess boards imported from India. Since Bombay became a center of making them, they became known as Bombay boxes. The ancient art of Sadeli Mosaic is said to have been introduced from Shiraz in Persia via Sind to Bombay, a long time before Indian boxes appeared. The designs on early boxes look deceptively simple. The fact is they emerged from a culture which had mastered geometry and understood how to generate a pattern from a set number of points. The patterns are so harmoniously combined that their incredible complexity isn’t immediately apparent to the viewer.
About Khatam Artwork: Khatam is a Persian version of marquetry, art forms made by decorating the surface of wooden articles with delicate pieces of wood, metal and other natural substances precisely-cut geometrical shapes.
