Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS
Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.
Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.
The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)
Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.
From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

These chairs were designed by French designer Charles Dudouyt, who created these carved oak chairs as 'fireside' chairs, hence the low seats. He crafted wooden furniture in strong Art Deco/ brutalist forms, using playful geometries and construction methods more in keeping with the robust Arts and Crafts Movement. This chair features significant and fantastic decorative fins atop the backs and armrests. The sphere-shaped terminals aren't the only ornamentations on the design; the shape of the two splats on the back, the carved stretchers, and the spherical feet are all decorative features that make this pair visually arresting. In later turned chairs, like these chairs, rush seats were common, especially in America, and the same goes for Europe, where wicker and rush were widespread and popular materials. Here, the seats are made of durable woven rush with the patinated wood of the structure. The legs are joined by box stretchers, enhancing the square shape of the design. Fantastic vintage Art Deco set of 3 chrome tube and original black vinyl or faux leather chairs attributed to Kem Weber Z Chair. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. The frames have scratches consistent with age and on two of the chairs the texture on the vinyl is a bit different than the third chair. These chairs also have an extra factory hole in the arm on opposite sides leading us to believe these may have been originally part of a ganged set. They work perfectly as singles, however. A beautiful set of six original French Art Deco tall back blonde wood and nickeled bronze dining chairs, attributed to Rene Prou.
Tall elegant backs with curvilinear top crest and shield shape lower backrest, featuring elegant sculptural cabriole front legs and tapered splay back legs.
An inset nickeled bronze side bar flanks and accents the back rest, granting this chair a very unusual and unique style.
These chairs are skillfully designed, well crafted and of solid construction.
The cushion seats and backs in desert taupe/ mauve color naugahyde upholstery are in good vintage condition but are original and of the period.
The cushions are easily removable for re -upholstery if need be.

RENE PROU -- 1889-1948
Rene Prou was born in Nantes and educated in Paris. He was a furniture and a decorator who studied at the Ecole Bernard-Palissy in Paris.
Shortly thereafter, Prou joined the design house, Gouffé and became their chief designer. He was known as the first decorator of the modern taste.
Some of his achievements include:

1922 – Paris to Deauville train (aka Train Bleu)
1923 – He showed at the Salon des Artistes Decorateurs.
