1910s German Silver and Glass Swan Dish / Centrepiece
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
An exceptional, fine and impressive, antique German silver and glass dish / centrepiece modelled in the form of a swan; part of our continental silverware collection. This exceptional antique German 800 standard silver centrepiece / dish has been realistically modelled in the form of a swan. The body of the dish has been embellished with embossed and chased decoration reproducing the fine details of the swan's plumage and anatomical features. The centrepiece is fitted with the original frosted glass liner; the shape of the glass parallels the swan's wings. The interior of the silver and glass dish retains the original gilding. Such dishes with paralleling-shaped glass liners are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Condition This antique swan centrepiece dish is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The embossed and chased decoration is very sharp. The hallmarks struck to the underside of the base are very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this antique glass swan dish...

Pair of Coalport Porcelain Oval Dishes, Flowers & Birds Patt.759, Regency ca1815
Located in London, GB
This is a spectacular pair of oval dishes made by Coalport between 1815 and 1820. The dishes bear the famous and very wonderful bird pattern with the number 759. Panels with stunning hand painted birds and flowers are set in a cobalt blue background with rich gilt decoration. This pattern is very desired and doesn't come to the market often, so this is a rare opportunity. Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th Century Staffordshire. They worked alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport and Minton, and came out with many innovative designs. When we say "Coalport" we usually think of the one Coalport factory that became famous, but in its beginning years there were two factories, one run by John Rose and the other by his brother Thomas Rose. Thomas Rose went into partnership with Robert Anstice and Robert Horton and they were located directly opposite John Rose, across the canal. The brothers' factories had much in common with each other and they shared many different shapes and patterns. Ultimately, the John Rose factory proved more profitable and John Rose bought Thomas' factory in 1814, making it the one Coalport factory that became so famous. Many of the Coalport items, of either factory, are now collectors' items. The stunning thing about pattern 759 is that each bird is different, as well as each flower formation. All birds and flowers are painted carefully in their own colours; they are all different species. Each bird is an individual with its own expression; in fact I once had a large dinner service...

Milk Glass Candy Dish W/ Lid, Westmoreland Glass Co. Argonaut Shell Pattern
Located in New Orleans, LA
A vintage, 1950's milk glass covered candy dish by Westmoreland, in the Argonaut pattern, having lovely garlands of shells, beading, dolphin feet and a shell top handle. First made by Westmoreland in the 1920s in the United States, milk glass was the most remarkable and prolific product the company manufactured. In fact, they were one of the top producers of fine quality milk glass in the United States, according to the Collector's Encyclopedia of Milk Glass by Betty and Bill Newbound. The pattern for this eclectic lidded milk glass bowl, #1048, was based on the original Dauphins pattern by Portieux Vallerysthal which debuted in 1908. Westmoreland copied the design and made their own mould calling the production a “Faithful Reproduction of a Classic Design". From what I understand, over 20 colors were produced in this pattern beginning in the late 1950s all the way through 1984; milk glass was discontinued in 1963. The pattern consists of raised seashells, beaded lip and a stylized dolphin footed tripod base; an Argonaut shell serves as the lid’s handle. It measures 7” high with the lid on; lid off 3½”; 6” lip diameter; tripod base width 6”. It weighs a hefty 2 lbs. 9 oz.. Color is snowy white milk glass that has some opalescent hues depending on light casting; medium is pressed moulded glass. Overall in excellent condition with minimal wear. Interior lid has the mark Westmoreland used from 1940 to 1980. A beautiful piece that would look fabulous on any vanity or table top as a décor accent or trinket bowl or a perfect gift for a Westmoreland Glass...

Vintage, New and Antique Serving Bowls

Vintage, new and antique serving bowls are popular with collectors as well as cooks. While some serving bowls are merely decorative items, others are both eye-catching and functional.

The design and material of a bowl will vary depending on the period and location where it was made. Antique Chinese serving bowls are often exquisitely painted and made from fine porcelain. Colonial American wooden bowls are practical and elegant, able to hold brightly colored fruit or act as a serving dish at a family meal.

Along with wood, stone, metal and porcelain, there are also glass serving bowls. The most notable are made from Murano glass, named for the Murano Island in Venice where many of the world’s most famous glass objects have been produced. Glass serving bowls from the 19th through the mid-20th century are especially popular with collectors. Pieces from this era range from simple to ornate, frequently featuring gold or painted embellishments.

The styles of these bowls include art glass, which dates to the mid-19th century, and colorful carnival glass, which was introduced in the early 20th century. Carnival glass serving bowls were more affordable so they were used widely in homes. Depression glass, an iteration of glassware that was inexpensively mass-produced when people didn’t have much money to spend on decor during the 1920s and ’30s, featured bright colors. Milk glass, which had its heyday in the late 19th century, adds a touch of elegance to any table or display.

Antique and vintage serving bowls are desirable for their style, patterns and range of textures they can help introduce to a space. They are also prized for their rich history. Browse antique and vintage serving bowls on 1stDibs today.
