Jean de la Fontinelle (French, 1900-1974)
A beautifully modelled Art Deco silvered bronze sculpture in the form of an elephant, with trunk aloft and legs resting on a heptagonal plinth as if performing in the circus. The bronze is mounted on a rectangular green marble base, and the silvered plinth is signed L FONTINELLE.
de la Fontinelle exhibited at the Exposition des Artistes Animaliers in Paris in 1929, and was a contemporary of Paul Jouve, André Margat and the sculptors Charles Artus, Raymond Bigot and François Pompon. Predominantly working in ceramic, de la Fontinelle’s bronze works are rare.
