Bronze 'Horatius' mantel clock by Robert Ainé
Located in HAARLEM, NL
A very imposing high quality bronze cast, fire guilded Empire mantel clock, of remarkable size with high quality details. The theme of this amazing decorative object is the philosopher Horatius sitting on the ruins of Rome, including a fallen column and a horses head. He was a very important Roman philosopher. He sits on a square block which is a clock, signed by Robin Aine the elder, clockmaker to the king. The eight day ‘on count wheel’ striking movement with ‘silk thread’ suspension. Robert Robin (1742-1799) was enrolled as a master-watchmaker on 28 November 1767. Already as of 1763, he benefited from many advantages in practising his art as 'Privileged Merchant-Watchmaker of the King following the Court and Councils of His Majesty'. He was appointed watchmaker to the Duke of Chartres at the end of 1778 and obtained one of the four posts as ordinary watchmaker to the King in 1782. Robert Robin wrote several memoirs on remontoirs, turret clocks and decimal watches. He made the first lever watches...

A Twin Fusee Bracket Clock By Dent
By Dent
Located in Amersham, GB
A striking two train bracket clock of exceptional quality by one of the great nineteenth century makers. The eight day twin fusee movement strikes on a blued steel gong behind a silvered arabic dial, signed Dent and numbered 58242 on both th dial and the back plate. Housed in a solid mahogany case with brass mounts and a gadrooned pergoda top surmounted by an acorn finial, and supported by bun feet. The sides ar pierced with attractive fish scale sound vents lined with dark blue velvet. The movement and case are both of remarkable quality, as you would expect from a clock made by Dent. The history of Dent & Co. spans three centuries of precision watch and clock making in Great Britain. Established in 1814 by Edward J. Dent, the company embraced the Victorian fervour for technological innovation and created precision chronometers to navigate the Royal Navy and guide some of the most intrepid explorers on their voyages. The British Empire was in full expansion and its maritime tradition had produced some remarkable technological breakthroughs from the late 18th century. Propelling the impetus of Britain’s primacy, Dent proved a key player in Victorian horological history manufacturing the Standard Clock at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich which was to keep “Greenwich Mean Time” the time to which all others in the Empire were referred (better known today as G.M.T.) and continued to do so until replaced by an electronic clock in 1946. Dent also made probably the most famous clock in the world - the Great Clock for the Houses of Parliament, familiarly known as Big Ben. Dent’s reputation soared and their chronometers accompanied some of the century's most influential and colourful explorers. Dent chronometer...

Vintage, New and Antique Mantel Clocks

Personal time-telling devices may have migrated from our pockets to our wrists and finally onto our phones, but despite the convenience of a handheld digital timekeeper, nothing can beat well-made vintage, new and antique mantel clocks.

Invented by clockmakers in France and popularized in the 18th and 19th centuries, these practical yet ornate pieces were typically displayed on top of fireplaces or desks. While the most common mantel clocks were created in the traditional tambour style, which features a wide base that flares into an upright drum- or camelback-shaped case, modern clockmakers and furniture designers have experimented with their own ideas for these decorative objects over the years, introducing different forms and working with unconventional materials. A collection of whimsical, monochromatic handmade mantel clocks crafted by Dutch designer Kiki van Eijk, called Floating Frames, for example, features minimalist frames of anodized wire and ceramic clockfaces.

When shopping for an antique, vintage or new mantel clock, don’t be afraid to branch out. Wood mantel clocks of any era will bring a classic, elegant allure to the shelving in your living room or the bookcase in your bedroom, while Empire-style mantel clocks will comparatively boast eye-catching gilt bronze and pronounced sculptural attributes. Some Art Deco mantel clocks will feature an integration of marble or glass and will likely be marked by the decorative embellishments associated with that particular furniture style.

There’s just something about cool clocks, right? Spend your time with an extraordinary collection of mantel clocks on 1stDibs today.
