About the Item
A small and delightful Japanese cloisonné and goldstone tripod incense burner and cover, Meiji period, late 19th century, Japan.
The small incense burner, called a koro, is comprised of a squat, compressed globular body supported by three short wispy legs, with a cover surmounted by a chrysanthemum shaped finial.
The censer decorated all over in the cloisonné technique, with areas of goldstone. Goldstone refers to reflective material being scattered in the enamel to give it a sparkling effect.
The upper part of the body featuring a design of alternating quatrefoil reserves of turquoise ground enamel with images of cherry blossoms, and goldstone ground enamel with images of butterflies.
The lower section of the body of black enamel ground with beautiful wire work and scattered flowers of various colored enamel.
The lid also of black ground enamel, and topped with a cast metal chrysanthemum blossom final.
The interior enameled turquoise.
