About the Item
A very fine and intricately decorated Japanese cloisonné box and cover, Meiji period, late 19th century, Japan.
The lidded trinket or jewelry box exquisitely decorated in the cloisonné enamel technique upon a copper base, the interior of brass with etched designs.
The exterior of the box beautifully worked with an elaborate design of fan and roundel shapes featuring images of various flowers and birds, including cranes, plovers, plum, peony, chrysanthemum, hibiscus, iris, lily, buttercup, and wisteria, among others.
The interior of the box clad in brass and etched with a design of an onagadori, long tailed cockerel, and signed "fuku" within a fan shaped cartouche. The onagadori, with its magnificent tail, represents
The interior of the lid also clad in brass, and etched with a design of bamboo and sparrows.
The underside of the box featuring a stunning design of a single chrysanthemum blossom with trailing vegetal tendrils set against a cobalt blue ground, and framed by a fish scale patterned turquoise ground.
The box expressed in a veritable rainbow of colors, including burgundy red, turquoise and navy blue, light and dark green, white, black, pink, and yellow.
The wire work extremely fine, and the roundel patterns match up between the cover and the box.
Overall a fantastic example of Japanese Meiji period cloisonné work.
