Zaha Hadid Art

British, Iraqi, 1950-2016

Zaha Hadid left an indelible mark on the architectural world, transforming the look of contemporary architecture with her striking abstract and modernist designs. Fluid forms and Constructivist aesthetics — such as bold colors and softly angular edges — are the keynotes of her buildings and her furniture. Hadid’s work is the essence of energy and drama.

Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Hadid studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London and made that city her home for much of her life. Hadid’s design sensibility was formed more by art than architecture. In college, she was first inspired by the Russian avant-garde school of artists. The influence of painters such as Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich is apparent in Hadid’s early work, in which she created abstract paintings and drawings to convey her ideas. The distortion of geometric shapes is a particularly prominent and recurring theme in her work. Hadid founded her firm in 1980, from which she launched architectural triumphs like the MAXXI Museum in Rome and the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art at Cincinnati's Contemporary Arts Center.

Hadid’s furniture and sculptures provide her admirers with the chance to bring the beauty and drama of her architecture into their homes. These designs are true centerpieces that fill even staid rooms with fluidity and rhythm. The organic forms of her designs bring a sweeping sense of movement to stationary objects. The furniture exhibits a kind of playfulness and creates a relationship with the user. Hadid transformed furniture into fine art.

This series, comprised of the mesmerizing sculptures "Ninjacat," "Shoguncat," and "Kungfucat," wove a tale of feline prowess and martial arts mastery. In the crowded streets of Akihabara, where the hum of neon lights mingles with the echoes of ancient samurai legends, Hiro Ando found inspiration. His journey began with a fascination for the duality inherent in Japanese culture—the delicate artistry of the past colliding with the high-energy pulse of contemporary urban life. And so, the "Martial Felines Trilogy" was born. The first sculpture, "Ninjacat," emerged from the shadows, a sleek and silent sentinel of the night. With its sharp angles and stealthy posture, Ninjacat embodied the essence of a ninja warrior. Intricately carved from ebony-hued materials, the sculpture's eyes gleamed with an otherworldly intensity, reflecting the cunning and agility of its namesake. As the moon cast its glow over the city, "Shoguncat" stepped into the spotlight. Clad in ornate armor that mirrored the grandeur of ancient warriors, Shoguncat stood tall and proud. The fine details in the sculpture, from the meticulously crafted armor plates...

Vitra Fire Station

In 2016, abruptly and before her time, the world lost one of the most innovative, uncompromising and original architects of our era: the inimitable Zaha Hadid. During the late 80's and well into the the 90's Zaha Hadid was an admired architect who only had a handful of projects actually realized (despite winning many architectural competitions) Vitra, the renowned European furniture maker, commissioned her first realized project. The company has their headquarters, including corporate offices, showrooms and factories located on a "campus" in Germany, nearby Basel, Switzerland. In the late 80's a fire destroyed several buildings. The significant losses were mainly due to the fact that the company's complex was out of the jurisdiction of the fire stations...
