'Still Life of Daffodils', Paris Modernist, Royal Danish Academy, Charlottenborg
By Viggo Rorup
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'V. Rorup' for Viggo Julius Rorup (Danish, 1903-1971) and dated 1963. Exhibited: 'Copenhagen Art Association Exhibition, 1964', from exhibition stamp, verso, on stretcher bar. A substantial and vibrant Post-Impressionist still-life showing a profusion of fresh-cut daffodils informally arranged in a jade-green vase and set on a table in a sitting-room. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they founded the avante-garde group of artists named The Corner, which first introduced the principles of European Modernism to Danish painting. Rorup traveled widely, including to Italy, Austria, Spain, and, most importantly, to France, where his studies of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists had a great stylistic impact on his later work. As Rorup continued to paint in the south of France, his palette grew brighter and the earlier, more defined, contours of his forms became subsumed into scintillating nuances of light. We are pleased to offer this elegant and dazzling still-life from the artist's late period. Exhibitions: KE 1928-29, 1933-38; Corner Harvest 1939-41; Corner 1942- 71, 1981; Liljevalchs, Sth. 1946; Union Frcia 1947; Nordic Arts Association. 1947; Wild Wheat, Kunstindustrimus. 1948; New Carlsberg Foundation, Charlottenborg Palace, 1952; Cromisterne 1952;Kalundborg 1952; Da. contemporary art, Charlottenborg Palace 1956, 1958; Danish Institute Contemporary Art, Freedom Hall, Sønderborg 1961; Ostseeländer, Rostock 1961-62, 1969; Artists in Odsherred, 1977; Copenhagen 1978; Danish. landscapes, Norwegian Art Museum. 1981; Danish Cultural Institute, The Artists House, Ukraine 1986. 'Mediterranean Orange Grove', Paris Modernist, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts
By Viggo Rorup
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower left, 'V. Rorup' for Viggo Julius Rorup (Danish, 1903-1971) and dated 1967. A substantial, Post-Impressionist oil landscape showing a view of the Mediterranean with an orange tree and blossoming apple trees in the foreground, framing a view across cultivated fields towards the azure ocean beneath a clouded lilac and ivory sky. A charming and robust work that exemplifies the artist's characteristically lyrical and painterly brushwork, elegantly expressing it here in a gentle palette of moss, teal, lavender and soft pastels. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Free Exhibition at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they formed the foundation of the avante-garde group of Modernists, The Corner, that first introduced the principles of Modernism to Danish painting. His palette grew brighter, and his earlier defined contours were subsumed into the nuances of light. We are pleased to offer a dazzling work from the artist's late period, that exemplifies these later qualities of his mature work, harmoniously capturing the warmth and color of a southern summer landscape. Exhibitions: KE 1928-29, 1933-38; Corner Harvest 1939-41; Corner 1942- 71, 1981; Liljevalchs, Sth. 1946; Union Frcia 1947; Nordic Arts Association. 1947; Wild Wheat, Kunstindustrimus. 1948; New Carlsberg Foundation, Charlottenborg Palace, 1952; Cromisterne 1952;Kalundborg 1952; Da. contemporary art, Charlottenborg Palace 1956, 1958; Danish Institute Contemporary Art, Freedom Hall, Sønderborg 1961; Ostseeländer, Rostock 1961-62, 1969; Artists in Odsherred, 1977; Copenhagen 1978; Danish. landscapes, Norwegian Art Museum. 1981; Danish Cultural Institute, The Artists House, Ukraine 1986. "Fog and Brook" Mid Century Impressionistic Oil Painting by Central Park
By Coulton Waugh
Located in New York, NY
Colton Waugh was a third generation American Artist. He was mostly known for his Marine paintings, still-life paintings, and landscapes. He attended the Art Students League and learned his technique using the pallet knife, which is noted in most of his paintings. This painting is a very rich celebration of color and texture. It can be noted that the artist was fond of using the pallet knife, and in this painting, we can see great executions of this. The brilliant contrasts are highlighted to great depth, as we can almost feel that this painting has a sculptural effect. This piece is truly inviting with beautiful details, as the "Fog and Brook" of Central Park in New York City is portrayed whimsically and gracefully. The painting is signed lower left and titled on verso by the artist. It comes in a the original Mid-Century natural wood frame with silver face and with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 25 x 30 inches Framed measures 26 x 31 inches Coulton Waugh was born in 1896 in Cornwall, England. He was an American visual artist, son of maritime painter Frederick Judd Waugh, and his grandfather was the Philadelphia portrait painter Samuel Waugh. In 1907 his family moved to the United States, he grew up in Provincetown, Massachusetts and later made his home in Newburgh, New York. Over there Waugh was enrolled at New York's Art Students League where he studied with George Bridgman, Frank Dumond, and John Carlson. By 1916 Coulton was employed as a textile designer. In 1921 he moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts where he operated a model ship and hooked rug shop for 11 years. As a part of an artistic family, Waugh was a painter, comic strip artist and author. As he lived in New York he is often known for the artistic work in marine scenes, still life compositions and cartoons. Also was one of the main artists who worked on the famous “Dickie Dare” comics, created by Milton Caniff. He was working on the strip for more than 20 years, from 1933 until 1957, and there is where Waugh met his future wife, Odin, after hiring her to work on the strip as an artist and letterer. In 1945, he created “Hank” which only ran a short time. From 1947 on, Waugh divided his time between painting, teaching art and writing a seminal history of cartooning called “The Comics” in 1947 as a reference on the history of comics, which became one of the first serious examinations of the medium, as well as instructional books on cartooning and palette-knife painting. In Provincetown, he created other pictorial maps or decorative maps, including ones of Provincetown of 1924, Cape Cod of 1926 and Newburgh, New York in 1958. His map of California of 1948 was a collaboration with his wife Odin Burvik (Mabel Burwick). His paintings were displayed at New York's Hudson Walker Gallery, and he also was known for his pictorial maps and hand-colored lithographs, like the one exhibited of a Cape Cod map...
