"Untitled, " Alan Fenton, Abstract Expressionism, New York School, Color Field
Located in New York, NY
Alan Fenton (1927 - 2000)
Untitled, 1958-1960
Oil on canvas
88 x 82 1/2 inches
Signed on the stretcher
Fenton's quiet and contemplative nonobjective paintings and drawings were widely recognized for their demanding yet understated means of revealing a serious and sober essence. He identified greatly with Mark Rothko, a friend, as well as Adolph Gottlieb and Jack Tworkov, with whom he had studied privately. Fenton painted in New York City in the late 50's as the explosion of Abstract Expressionism turned into a rebellion against gestural, emotional painting.
More concerned about his art than his posture, he expanded upon a tradition in painting with influences as diverse as Whistler and Turner as well as Ad Reinhardt and Joseph Albers.
Alan Fenton was born in Cleveland in 1927, studied at the Cleveland School of Art, The Arts Students League, The New School, and at NYU, earning his BFA at Pratt Institute, where he later taught painting for many years. At seventeen, Fenton served in the Merchant Marines where he began a career as a professional boxer, a skill he had honed on the streets.
He moved successfully through the graphic design business en route to becoming a painter in New York at the height of the art revolution of the fifties and sixties. Fenton enjoyed success with his subtle washes and pencil drawings as well as large abstract canvases...

Origin II: The Cooling (The Calm Before Life's Spark) (Floats in Black Frame)
By Steve Cohen
Located in New York, NY
Elemental Force. The work suspends gravity and paint and creates a flow which mirrors the origin from which both emerge. It replays this interdependence with color and movement-reflecting the Earth in cross section. 3 origin pieces can work together or stand alone.
Specifics: Enamel on canvas done with a unique technique of lying underneath the canvas to manipulate the movements. Beautifully framed with 2 inch deep frame. 1/2 inch border seen in front as the canvas floats within. Vibrant colors. Abstract Presentation.
About The Artist:
“I have been painting with light my entire career. But lighting design is ephemeral. Once you see my work, it evaporates, and you are left with the impression I leave you attached to the music and environment you are present in at the time. Painting has allowed me to channel those visual disciplines in the 3-dimensional world of canvas and paint." Steve’s work has been exhibited at numerous galleries and fairs and is private collections.
When not painting Steve is an award-winning production designer, lighting and video designer and director. Over his 40 year career in the music and television industry, Cohen has designed tours and major events for many of the world’s most prominent music and comedy artists including Billy Joel, Elton John,Reba McEntire, Sugarland, Tim McGraw, LennyKravitz, Blake Shelton, Justin Timberlake, N’Sync, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, John Mellencamp, Hall and Oates, Paul Simon, Simon and Garfunkel, Don Henley and The Eagles to name a few, as well as numerous TV productions for HBO, Showtime, MTV, VH1 including Whoopi Goldberg on Broadway and Dane Cook and George Lopez.
In recent years he has designed and directed Star Wars in Concert for George Lucas. As well as designing the Stephen King - John Mellencamp production of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, Lenny Kravitz World Tour, IHEART Latina Festival and Jingle Ball, Jenifer Lopez Neighborhood concert and TV special, Global Citizens Festival in Central Park, The Keep Memory Alive Power of Love Gala (4 years running) to Muhammad Ali, Quincy Jones, Andre Bocelli, and Gloria Estefan, The Classic East West Festivals in Dodger Stadium and Citi field featuring the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. He has also produced the concert film and documentary “Plain Spoken John Mellencamp” currently on Netflix, and has produced the Emmy award winning documentaries “At Home at the Garden” and New York State of Mind...
