Stella Sullivan Art

Stella Sullivan was born in Houston, Texas. She earned her degree in architecture from Rice Institute (now Rice University) and worked for her father in architectural drafting. She received private lessons from artist Ola McNeill Davidson and attended classes at Museum School (now Glassell School of Art) of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Sullivan moved to Michigan, where she studied at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, later transferring to the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where she graduated with her master of fine arts degree. Sullivan was an instructor at the Glassell School of Art, University of Houston, Sam Houston State University, and the University of Delaware. She established the Stella Sullivan School of Art where she taught painting, drawing, design, and silkscreening during the 1970s. Her career as an artist and teacher in Houston spans seven decades.

Birds of Europe by John and Elisabeth Goult, 1832
By John Gould and Elizabeth Gould
Located in Paris, FR
Rare Set of 6 beautiful Naturalistic hand-colored lithograph prints by John Gould from his work Birds of Europe, embelished with gum arabic in vibrant colors. Published 1832 - 1837 by Hullmandel, Walter and Walton. Presented in gold leaf wood frames. Very charming . The price includes the set of 6 framed ones. John Gould (1804–1881) is the most prolific publisher of ornithological subjects of all time. In 19th-century Europe, his name was as well known as Audubon’s was in North America. Unlike Audubon, whose life’s work focused on one region, Gould traveled widely and employed other artists to help create his lavish, hand-colored lithographic folios. John Gould’s love of natural history was fostered in the gardens of King George III where his father was chief gardener at Windsor Castle. Although trained as a gardener, Gould’s interests quickly evolved, and at the age of 20, he was appointed taxidermist to the Zoological Society of London. After three years, he progressed to the position of curator of birds and chief taxidermist. In 1830, newly married, Gould and his artist wife, Elizabeth Gould...

Frederick Elmiger (American, 1890-1975) Henry Bergh – The Founder of the A.S.P.C.A. • Watercolour, gouache, Indian ink and possibly some oil paint on heavy paper • Sheet measures, ca. 44.5 x 57.5 • Signed and monogrammed Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. The image depicts a street scene in 19th century New York in which Henry Bergh rebukes a carter, who is brutalizing his starving horse and making it drag the overloaded wagon. The here depicted Henry Bergh was the son of a German ship builder in New York and with the aid of his small private income, he spent most of his life fighting for laws protecting animals. Over fierce opposition and ridicule he obtained a charter in 1867 from State of New York forming the A.S.P.C.A. (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and in 1875 a similar one covering the prevention of cruelty to children. By 1893 all states had adopted laws based on his original statutes. And the artist, who painted this dramatic scene was Frederick Elmiger (1890-1975), an American illustrator. He frequently produced series - often with historical themes - for the Donald...
