Sigmar Polke Art
German, 1941-2010
Sigmar Polke was an influential German artist whose inventive paintings and photographs used non-traditional materials, such as meteorite dust or detergent. The artist once stated,“There has to be an element in of risk-taking for me in my work.” His wry probing of aesthetic taste is evident in his work “Alice im Wunderland (Alice in Wonderland)” (1972), a painting layered with irony, psychological states, and fiction.
Born on February 13, 1941, in Oels, Polke and his family were expelled to East Germany after the World War II. Growing up in the German Democratic Republic left a lasting impact on the artist, especially the sensorial overload of consumer culture he experienced upon moving to West Germany in 1953.
While studying at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Polke, Gerhard Richter, and Konrad Lueg created what is now known as capitalist realism. Together, these artists responded to the nationalistic themes of socialist realism, while also critiquing West Germany’s burgeoning consumer society. Polke’s work went on to have a profound impact on a generation of young American artists, including Julian Schnabel and David Salle.
Polke died on June 10, 2010, in Cologne, Germany, at the age of 69.
Today, his works are included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Kunstmuseum Bonn in Germany, and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, among others.(Biography provided by Rosenbaum Contemporary)

Richard Anuszkiewicz was born in Erie, Pennsylvania to Polish immigrants. While at the Cleveland Institute of Art, he studied plein-air painting with Henry Hensche. After winning a Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship in 1953, Anuszkiewicz attended Yale University where he studied under Josef Albers. While at Yale he studied alongside fellow Cleveland Op artist Julian Stanczak. After receiving his M.F.A. at Yale, Anuszkiewicz went on to Kent State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education.
At just age 23, his work was exhibited at the May Show at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He was given his first solo show in March 1960 in New York.
Because of his early success, Anuszkiewicz had the freedom to pursue his ideas creatively. Anuszkiewicz was one of the leading artists of the Op Art movement during the 1960s and 1970s. His style is distinctive for its high-intensity colors that he applies to geometric configurations. Many of Anuszkiewicz works are reminiscent of Josef Albers paintings...

Yayoi Kusama Biography
Yayoi Kusama's work has transcended two of the most important art movements of the second half of the twentieth century: Pop art and Minimalism. Her highly influential career spans paintings, performances, room-size presentations, outdoor sculptural installations, literary works, films, fashion, design, and interventions within existing architectural structures, which allude at once to microscopic and macroscopic universes.
Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, Kusama’s work has been featured widely in both solo and group presentations. She presented her first solo show in her native Japan in 1952. In the mid-1960s, she established herself in New York as an important avant-garde artist by staging groundbreaking and influential happenings, events, and exhibitions. Her work gained renewed widespread recognition in the late 1980s following a number of international solo exhibitions, including shows at the Center for International Contemporary Arts, New York, and the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, both of which took place in 1989. She represented Japan in 1993 at the 45th Venice Biennale, to much critical acclaim. In 1998, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, co-organized Love Forever: Yayoi Kusama, 1958–1968, which toured to the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (1998-1999), and Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (1999).
More recently, in 2011 to 2012, her work was the subject of a large-scale retrospective that traveled to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. From 2012 through 2015, three major museum solo presentations of the artist’s work simultaneously traveled to major museums throughout Japan, Asia, and Central and South America. In 2015, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, organized a comprehensive overview of Kusama’s practice that traveled to Henie-Onstad Kunstsenter, Høvikodden, Norway; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; and Helsinki Art Museum. In 2017-2019, a major survey of the artist’s work, Infinity Mirrors, was presented at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Seattle Art Museum; The Broad, Los Angeles; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; The Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia. Yayoi Kusama: Life Is the Heart of the Rainbow, which marked the first large-scale exhibition of Kusama’s work presented in Southeast Asia, opened at the National Gallery of Singapore in 2017 and traveled to the Queensland Art Gallery Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara, Jakarta. In 2019, All About Love Speaks Forever, an exhibition "tailor-made" specifically for the Fosun Foundation, Shanghai included more than 40 works by the artist.
A comprehensive retrospective of the artist’s work was on view at Gropius Bau, Berlin in 2021, and traveled to the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2022. KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature...

But Polke showed right from the beginning an ironic distance to the sociocritical style of his combatants, that will run through his entire Ouevre. Influenced by the Fluxus and Neo Dada scene around Joseph Beuys, Daniel Spoerri, Dick Higgins and others in the early 1960s Polke developed is own style characterised by an anarchic mind and esprit. Simliar to the Pop Art Polke searched for the asthetic in the trivial but here too he simoultanesly disavowed the trivial through irony.
Very typical for Polke are the famous grid images, known from newspaper printings, where there are horizontal, uniform lines of small dots and by combining certain dots there arises a form. By using perforated sheets and airbrush he could overlay more monochrome grids to create vibrating images and he often played in the printing process with enforced mistakes and errors to disassemble the firm surface of an image to a process of dekomposition.
Next to irony and anarchy other keywords to his works are heterogeneity, polyperspectivity and multivalent metamorphoses in which every reality could be something possibly different at the same time. A world where everything is connected; not by fundamental unity but by fragmentary dispersion. Because there is no one true reality, he transfers his works in an intermediate state of transformability.
