A bravura brushwork study of a young woman wearing a floral patterned shirt gazing calmly towards the viewer. A noted portrait and still life painter, Leon Franks studied at the Academie Julian and Grande Chaumiere in Paris and, subsequently, in Los Angeles at the Chouinard Art Institute and the Los Angeles Art Center. Franks additionally studied privately with Nicolai Fechin, Will Foster and F. Tolles Chamberlain. Before settling in Los Angeles in 1936, where Franks continued his education and began designing for the movie industry, he did portraits and decorations for Vancouver theaters. The author of several 'How to Paint' books, including titles 'How to Do Still Life' (1952) and 'Leon Franks on Techniques' (1964), Franks was a teacher. Portrait of a young woman in an elegant white dress by Antonio Sotomayor (Bolivian, 1902-1985). Signed "Sotomayor" in the lower left corner. Presented in a wood frame. Image size: 30.25"H x 25.25"W Antonio Sotomayor (Bolivian, 1902-1985) was born in Chulumani, Bolivia on May 13, 1902. Sotomayor began his art studies in La Paz under Belgian master Adolf Lambert and by age 15 was contributing illustrations to Bolivian periodicals. After settling in San Francisco in 1923, he continued his art training at the CSFA. He was soon busy illustrating newspapers, magazines, and books. His caricatures appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, Life, and others. He taught art at Mills College in Oakland (1942-43) and at the CSFA (1946-50). Sotomayor contributed greatly to California art for over 60 years until his death in San Francisco on Feb. 10, 1985. Member: SFAA; Bohemian Club. Exh: over 80 solo shows in U.S. and abroad; SFMA, 1935. Awards: SF Art Festival prize, 1959; Award of Honor, SF Art Commission, 1978. Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Joseph Newman (1890 - 1979) Joseph Newman was born in New York City in 1890. He attended the Pratt Institute and the Adelphi College Art School, and served in the U.S. Army during WWW1. After the war, he married and traveled to Europe. He returned to New York in the mid 1920's, and with a group of contemporaries formed The Fifteen Gallery in Manhattan. Newman painted a broad variety of subjects including genre scenes, landscapes, figurative works, and equestrian subjects. He worked in various styles ranging from academic realism to a looser, post-impressionist approach, and is best known for colorful, animated genre scenes painted in and around Rockport Harbor and as far west as Taos, New Mexico. He exhibited frequently at the Brooklyn Museum, The National Academy, The Carnegie Institute, The Whitney and The Society of Independent Artists. He was a member of the L.C.
