This artwork reflects the constant search of the artist for the effects of light in his work. This persistent concern for light remains throughout his artistic life, which he learned in his Parisian stage under the influence of the painter Frances Platour. The silver light of the moon and the small lights at distance, which are tiny foci of artificial light, reflecting the river water, forming a chromatic range of greens, ocher and pearly that give a certain mystery to the composition, creating a modern approach to the landscape, by placing the two large trees at the edge of the river in the foreground Luís Graner y Arrufí, Spanish (1863–1929) was a Catalan painter in the Realistic style. He was born in Barcelona, and studied at the Escola de la Llotja from 1883, with Antoni Caba (color/composition) and Benet Mercadé (drawing). During his final year at school, he received a grant to study in Madrid, where he copied and learned from the Old Masters at the Museo del Prado. After that, supported by a fellowship, he moved to Paris and became a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Later, he returned to Barcelona, but continued to travel to cities throughout Europe, including Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf. Influenced by Richard Wagner's concept of "Gesamtkunstwerk" (Total Work of Art), he was motivated to create his own total art experience and organized the "Sala Mercè" (Mercy Hall) in Barcelona's Rambla District. The project involved contributors from every artistic discipline, including the new field of cinematography. The room was decorated by Antoni Gaudí. Born in 1883 in Denmark to artistically inclined parents, Johann Berthelsen would become a widely successful singer, teacher, and painter. After his parents divorced, his mother brought Berthelsen and his siblings with her to the United States in 1890, eventually settling in Wisconsin. At eighteen, Berthelsen moved to Chicago in the hope of becoming an actor, but a friend at the Chicago Musical College convinced him to audition at his school. Berthelsen received a full scholarship and enrolled at the college, where he was awarded the Gold Medal twice. After graduating, he had an active career traveling across the United States and Canada performing in operas and concerts, before joining the voice faculty at his alma mater in 1910. Illustrated in "Daniel Garber Catalogue Raisonne" Vol. II, pg. 271, and in book titled "Blue Chips", pg. 33 Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Daniel Garber (1880-1958) One of the two most important and, so far, the most valuable of the New Hope School Painters, Daniel Garber was born on April 11, 1880, in North Manchester, Indiana. At the age of seventeen, he studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati with Vincent Nowottny. Moving to Philadelphia in 1899, he first attended classes at the "Darby School," near Fort Washington; a summer school run by Academy instructors Anshutz and Breckenridge. Later that year, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His instructors at the Academy included Thomas Anshutz, William Merritt Chase and Cecilia Beaux. There Garber met fellow artist Mary Franklin while she was posing as a model for the portrait class of Hugh Breckenridge. After a two year courtship, Garber married Mary Franklin on June 21, 1901. In May 1905, Garber was awarded the William Emlen Cresson Scholarship from the Pennsylvania Academy, which enabled him to spend two years for independent studies in England, Italy and France. He painted frequently while in Europe, creating a powerful body of colorful impressionist landscapes depicting various rural villages and farms scenes; exhibiting several of these works in the Paris Salon. Upon his return, Garber began to teach Life and Antique Drawing classes at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women in 1907. In the summer of that same year, Garber and family settled in Lumbertville, Pennsylvania, a small town just north of New Hope. Their new home would come to be known as the "Cuttalossa," named after the creek which occupied part of the land. The family would divide the year, living six months in Philadelphia at the Green Street townhouse while he taught, and the rest of the time in Lambertville. Soon Garber’s career would take off as he began to receive a multitude of prestigious awards for his masterful Pennsylvania landscapes. During the fall of 1909, he was offered a position to teach at the Pennsylvania Academy as an assistant to Thomas Anshutz. Garber became an important instructor at the Academy, where he taught for forty-one years. Daniel Garber painted masterful landscapes depicting the Pennsylvania and New Jersey countryside surrounding New Hope. Unlike his contemporary, Edward Redfield, Garber painted with a delicate technique using a thin application of paint. His paintings are filled with color and light projecting a feeling of endless depth. Although Like Redfield, Garber painted large exhibition size canvases with the intent of winning medals, and was extremely successful doing so, he was also very adept at painting small gem like paintings. He was also a fine draftsman creating a relatively large body of works on paper, mostly in charcoal, and a rare few works in pastel. Another of Garber’s many talents was etching. He created a series of approximately fifty different scenes, most of which are run in editions of fifty or less etchings per plate. Throughout his distinguished career, Daniel Garber was awarded some of the highest honors bestowed upon an American artist. Some of his accolades include the First Hallgarten Prize from the National Academy in 1909, the Bronze Medal at the International Exposition in Buenos Aires in 1910, the Walter Lippincott Prize from the Pennsylvania Academy and the Potter Gold Medal at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1911, the Second Clark Prize and the Silver Medal from the Corcoran Gallery of Art for “Wilderness” in 1912, the Gold Medal from the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco of 1915, the Second Altman Prize in1915, the Shaw prize in 1916, the First Altman Prize in 1917, the Edward Stotesbury Prize in1918, the Temple Gold Medal, in 1919, the First William A...

Kahn, March 6, 2014, The New York Times Onderdonk, a San Antonio native who died of an intestinal ailment in 1922, at 40, is best known for painting swaths of Texas bluebonnets. Those canvases can bring more than $500,000 each, while his New York scenes usually end up in the five-figure range. Onderdonk’s parents were painters in San Antonio, and in 1901, when he was a teenager, they sent him to New York for training. Through 1909, he lived in various Manhattan apartments and Staten Island houses. He then returned to Texas, but continued to spend months at a time in New York. In 1902 he had married a Manhattan teenage neighbor, Gertrude Shipman. While she focused on raising their daughter, Adrienne, and worrying about their strained finances, “he created more than 600 works of art, often producing a painting or two a day,” Eyewitnesses recorded his prolific pace in New York, but Onderdonk works bearing those dates rarely turn up. The puzzling gap in his productivity is explained in family correspondence that the Bakers uncovered: The artist admits that he was signing pieces with pseudonyms. He mostly used Chas. Turner and Chase Turner and occasionally resorted to Elbert H. Turner and Roberto Vasquez. Julian Onderdonk was the son of the important Texas landscapist, Robert Onderdonk. His figures, though seemingly entranced themselves by the beauty around them, are there primarily to give scale and a focal point. The trees are in deep, rich greens, while the pink-tinged sky further show off his talent in the realm of color. We are immediately pulled into the artist’s world. George William Sotter (1879 - 1953) Born in Pittsburgh on September 25, 1879, Sotter began his art education with local teachers and with Henry G. Keller, who had studied in various German academies. Keller, known for his superb, atmospheric watercolors, taught at the Cleveland School of Art but Sotter studied with him in Pittsburgh. Later Sotter would exhibit between 1903 and 1937 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His works were also shown at the Corcoran Gallery (1912-23), the Carnegie International (1901-26), the National Academy of Design (1913 and 1921), and at the Art Institute of Chicago (1911-27). In 1915, Sotter exhibited four works at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, where he won a silver medal. Sotter was known mainly as a stained-glass artist; his work may be seen from New York City to Salt Lake City. Around a dozen craftsmen worked under him for these commissions. Sotter spent the summer of 1902 with Pennsylvania impressionist Edward Redfield in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Between 1910 and 1919, Sotter taught at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. His paintings often feature large areas of sky filled with clouds and he frequently painted winter night scenes, such as Moonlight, Bucks County (Beacon Hill Fine Art), a perfectly successful depiction of a quiet, moonlit landscape filled with twinkling stars.
