This work was printed in the early 1920's in a small edition. Originally from Czechoslovakia, Fédor Löwenstein (Munich, 1901 - Nice, 1946) studied art in Germany before moving to Paris in 1923, attracted by its artistic influence. There he mixed with the painter André Lhote from Bordeaux and joined the Groupe des Surindépendants in 1936. His style evolved from Cubism to a form of Romantic abstraction. In 1938, he painted La Chute (The Fall), inspired by the signing of the Munich Agreement ratifying the dismantling of the Czechoslovakia created in 1918. France’s entry into the war drove him to leave the capital for Mirmande, a ruined village in the Drôme region, where Lhote held a summer academy. Löwenstein then divided his time between Mirmande and Nice where his mother and sister lived, but had to take refuge for a time in the Abbey of Aiguebelle. He fell ill in the autumn of 1943 and went to Paris to see a doctor; he died in Nice in 1946. Exhibited: Fédor Lowenstein...

Kono Bairei (1844 – 1895) Kacho-ga. (Birds and Flowers) Japan, c1880 Woodblock Print. 15 x 11. Okura Magobei, Publisher. The enthusiasm for nature prints transcends the centuries. “One Hundred Flowers” is a mid-nineteenth century work illustrating varieties of flowers in naturalistic styles. Traditional woodblock printing enhances the beauty of each work. The artist must carve different woodblocks for every color he wishes to transfer to paper. In this style of printing it is imperative that the register of each woodblock be exact as they must match perfectly to create an image without blurring. In addition to his illustrated flower books...

H.O. Miethke Das Werk folio "The Kiss" collotype print
By Gustav Klimt & K.K. Hof-und Staatsdruckerei
Located in Chicago, IL
The Kiss, no. 1 from the fifth installment of Das Werk Gustav Klimts Undoubtedly Klimt’s best known and most reproduced images, this printed version of The Kiss is the only one with which Klimt was directly involved. Unveiled at Vienna’s Kunstschau 1908, and saved for the fifth and final delivery of Das Werk, The Kiss marks a triumph in Klimt’s career and represents a culmination of many themes in his oeuvre up to that point. After all of the controversy surrounding the State’s prior rejection of the University murals commissioned from Klimt, the Ministry of Education reversed their policy toward the artist with a show of wholehearted support by purchasing for the Osterreichische Galerie BelvedereThe Kiss while it still hung in the Kunstschau exhibit. Considered in relation to the eight multicolored collotypes which preceded its print debut in the Das Werk portfolio, The Kiss literally embraces all which came before it. The golden seaweed dangling in tresses from the lovers’ feet harkens back to Water Snakes I and II. The bed of flowers evokes the settings Klimt created in both The Golden Knight and The Sunflower. In fact, this image sprung out of a particularly happy summer spent in the company of Klimt’s lover, Emilie Floge...
