Abbey Kuhe Sculptures
American
Abbey Kuhe’s formative years were largely spent searching for solace and serenity in the wilderness of central Connecticut and the island shores of Massachusetts. It wasn’t until after high school that she discovered a penchant for making art; specifically figure drawing and portraiture. She moved to NYC to attend The Parson’s School of Design. However, due to lack of finances, her art education ended after the foundation year. She spent the next five years working in fashion and film, exposing her to many of the shadow sides of creative industry, before ultimately putting herself back through school in a different discipline. She earned her BA with honors from The New School for Social Research in European Intellectual History, focusing on pre-political feminist philosophy and gendered epistemology. Always longing to make art, but stifled by inner criticism and anxiety, Abbey discovered a second chance in clay. A decade after dropping out of art school, she was urged by a friend to try a local open studio and has been experimenting in ceramics ever since. In 2016 Abbey moved to New Orleans with her two children for her partner’s new job at Tulane. Making up for lost time, she has been furiously training with William Depaux and Jeremy Jernegan at Newcomb College. Abbey’s work is inspired and informed by myriad visual and conceptual resources, from the intersections of social and climate justice to the golden age of children’s book illustration; from biophilic philosophies of biology to 19th Century textile design; from divine feminine mythologies to 16thcentury scientific expedition illustration. Throughout, Abbey draws from a rich well of seemingly disparate interests that find cohesion in her visual vocabulary, anchored in narrative and history.(Biography provided by LeMieux Galleries)

"Visually and conceptually my work is inspired and informed by myriad resources, from the intersections of social and climate justice to the golden age of children’s book illustration; from biophilic philosophies of biology to 19th Century textile design; from divine feminine mythologies to 16th century scientific expedition illustration. Throughout, I explore these tensions in human identity, using narrative and history of the human struggle to differentiate from or connect to nature.
I love the act of creating in clay as metonym for this struggle. It is of the earth and yet it is absolutely civilized. It is literally extracted from ancient alluvial deposits and is utilized in some of the most esoteric rituals of our species. And porcelain, in particular, references some of the most crucial moments in our histories of technology, industry, and colonialism. My hope is that the technique of sgraffito lends itself to an inclusive visual vocabulary in exploring these themes. The act of scratching into a surface in service of communication is one we even share with other species. " - Abbey Kuhe

Service Poisson Plate R (“Fish” Service Plate)
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Palo Alto, CA
A whimsical fish sits placidly in the center of Pablo Picasso ceramic Service Poisson Plate R (“Fish” Service Plate), 1947 A.R. 21. A sweeping light blue back and a peach colored belly make up the body of the fish. Light blue fins crown the back of the fish and a delicate tail parts off the back. Dashes of yellow encircle the rim of the creamy colored bowl, brightening the entire work and creating a dreamy abstracted pattern around the fish. The colors emit a tropical sensation, reminding the viewer of the warmth of the sun and the salty taste of the ocean air.

Paseo, from Service Scènes de Corrida, A.R. 416
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) Paseo A.R. 416 is numbered from the edition of 50 on the reverse and stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
Pablo Picasso was an avid fan of bullfighting his entire life, attending his first corridas when he was a child in Spain and gaining a renewed interest in the events when he settled in the South of France after World War II. Undoubtedly the theatrical drama and flashy machismo of the matadors appealed greatly to Picasso's sensibilities and resonated with his Spanish roots. In 1959, Picasso produced an 8-piece plate series, each featuring a different bullfighting scene suggested through lively stipple lines. Paseo A.R. 416 depicts a line of bullfighters highlighted by a streak of yellow. The strokes of blue above and below the figures contrast with the warm of the yellow, creating visual tension that anticipates the drama of the fight.
