Portrait of a Lady with Lace Collar - British 19th century art oil painting

Circa 1810

About the Item

This very charming British 19th century Old Master portrait oil painting is attributed to the circle of Thomas Lawrence. Painted circa 1810 it is a seated half length portrait of a lady, dressed in black with beautiful delicate lace collar, cuffs and bonnet. She also has a pendant of some description hanging on a long chain from a gold broach. If this wasn't all exquisite enough, the detail and brushwork in her face are simply superb. A really excellent 19th century portrait painted with great depth and sensitivity. Provenance. Cornish estate. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size is 36 inches by 28 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a complementary frame. Framed size is 44 inches by 36 inches and in good condition. Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) was a leading English portrait painter and the fourth president of the Royal Academy. Lawrence was a child prodigy. He was born in Bristol and began drawing in Devizes, where his father was an innkeeper at the Bear Hotel in the Market Square. At the age of ten, having moved to Bath, he was supporting his family with his pastel portraits. At eighteen he went to London and soon established his reputation as a portrait painter in oils, receiving his first royal commission, a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1790. He stayed at the top of his profession until his death, aged 60, in 1830.
