2019
About the Item
Besides producing still-lifes rich with glowing colors, liquid surfaces and meaning, Olga Antonova also paints bust-length self-portraits in which she appears dressed for the occasion and engaged in playful posturing and often flanked by animals, such as the crane in this painting. As is common in this form of portraiture in which the artist has studied his or her likeness in a mirror, the artist’s gaze retains some of the intensity that comes from carefully studying oneself. Antonova’s sensual, multi-layered pictures continue in the legacy of figurative painting while also engaging in a personal exploration of style and form.

- CATHERINE 6 - Contemporary Realism / Figurative Art / BlondeBy Stephen WrightLocated in New York, NYThe individuals in Stephen Wright’s work confront us visually and psychologically. His paintings tend to transfix. Standing before them, one is drawn in by the intent gaze of a woman, the slumped figure of a nude man, or the averted face of someone lost in reverie. Wright paints mainly solo subjects. They seem always to be slightly removed – yet they challenge, perplex, and attract us. In the manner of the British figurative painters, Wright emphasizes the surface of his canvases, manipulating layers of paint and leaving evidence of his brushwork. Like Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon, and even Jenny Saville...Category
