Original frame in gilded wood and gilded pastiglia. Autograph dedication of the artist in the back of the painting. Natale Schiavoni (Chioggia (Venice), 1777 – Venice, 1858) wan an Italian painter and engraver specialised in history and portraits. Born in Chioggia, near Venice, he worked both in Trieste and Milan, and in 1816 he became the official portraitist of the Austrian emperor. And when in 1820 he returned to Venice, he became professor at the Academy of Arts. His works are exposed at the National Gallery of Berlin, at the Vienna Museum, and at the British Museum, London. The portrait, which depicts Schiavoni’s sister, was realised as a souvenir for a friend of Natale Schiavoni, Luigi Sernagiotto, a Venetian collector whose collection has been dispersed. The work is dated 1854, and it was realised in Venice. Recto inscription – "Souvenir dell’amico Luigi Sernagiotto ritratto della sorella eseguito dal celebre Natale Schiavoni in 1854 Venezia" – Souvenir to a friend Luigi Sernagiotto, portrait of the sister executed by the famous Natale Schiavoni in Venice, 1854.
