Jesse F. Reed
American Social Realist Portrait Painting of a Coal Mine Owner by Jesse F. Reed

ca. 1970

About the Item

This highly stylized portrait depicts a well dressed man in front of a mining property likely in West Virginia. It is very much in the manner of earlier American artists such as Grant Wood or a bit of Norman Rockwell. As he is well dressed, he is, or was, likely the owner or operator of the mining operation that is shown in the background. The artist, Jesse F. Reed captured all of the complexities of such an unusual portrait in a more modernist and simpler manner. The colors are vibrant and the landscape and portrait mainly a collection of shapes. Some shadow and tone is portrayed but the overall feel is one of American Social Realism with a modernist sensibility. Jesse Reed was born in Belington, West Virginia in 1920. After local schooling, he studied art in New York and the served in various European campaigns during World War II. After the war he returned to West Virginia to teach, for a long career. He exhibited often nationally and was a member of the Salmagundi Club. He died in 2011. This portrait appears to have been painted ca 1970. The oil on canvas measures 18” x 24” and retains its painted original frame. Both the painting and frame are in good condition with no condition issues to report. The frame seems to have a vague marbling affect that appears to be original as well. The overall framed dimensions are 23” x 29”.
