Son of the painter Théodore Fantin-Latour, he first started working under the direction of his father, and then alongside Lecoq de Boisbaudran and Courbet.
He enrolled into l'Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1854, and debuted at the 1861 salon. He was part of the "Salon des Refusés" in 1863.
He earned his first medal at the salon of 1870, then again in 1878, and in 1879 he was decorated with the French Légion d'Honneur.
This delicate artists work is characterized by his soft touch technique and his diffuse light. He produced work and excelled in portraits, genre scenes, floral works, as well as allegoric compositions. He was also a master pastellist and lithographer.
Contemporary of the Impressionists, he was a close friend of theirs, and shared there struggle without ever being one of them.
