Obiora Anamaleze
What If

2023

About the Item

In "What If," a mesmerizing artwork by the talented artist Obiora Anamaleze, a woman is depicted holding an apple with her face concealed by flowing locks of intricately woven hair. The enigmatic composition is complemented by the presence of a delicate flower in the background, adding layers of symbolism to the narrative. Anamaleze's use of symbolism and metaphor is a hallmark of his artistry. The woman's obscured face invites viewers to ponder the mysteries concealed within, fostering a sense of curiosity and wonder. The apple she holds becomes a focal point, laden with cultural and biblical connotations, prompting contemplation on themes of temptation, knowledge, and the consequences of choice. The weaved hair, flowing and intricate, serves as both a veil and a form of expression. Its intricate patterns suggest a hidden complexity, inviting viewers to explore the layers of the woman's identity and the stories that remain untold. The choice to conceal the face adds an element of universality, allowing the viewer to project their own narratives onto the artwork. The flower in the background introduces a touch of delicacy and contrast to the composition. Its presence adds a layer of beauty and fragility, juxtaposed against the mysterious narrative unfolding in the foreground. The juxtaposition of the woman, the apple, the weaved hair, and the flower creates a visual poem that sparks contemplation about the interconnectedness of nature, femininity, and the ever-present "what if" scenarios that shape our lives. "What If" stands as a testament to Obiora Anamaleze's ability to weave together complex themes with visual elegance. The artwork invites viewers to engage in a dialogue with the unknown, encouraging introspection and reflection on the myriad possibilities that life presents. About Artist Obiora Anamaleze was born and raised in Enugu, South-East Nigeria, to a family of five. After his primary and secondary education in Enugu, Obiora moved to the University of Benin, Benin, Edo State where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a specialization in Painting in 1998, he later obtained a Master of Art and Ph.D. in Fine Arts and Design, with a specialization in Painting from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State in 2012 and 2017, respectively. He has participated in several exhibitions. Obiora is happily married, he lives and works in Port Harcourt, and enjoys swimming, scrabble, and preaching. Obiora’s preferred medium is oil and with it, he tries to capture the importance of human emotion and relationships through the synthesis of the three most important aspects of society - children, women, and nature plus other striking moments of human existence. His work aims to counteract a dehumanized society, with inspiration from his childhood memories and innocence. Obiora’s practice is driven by his passion for the African society. Obiora tries to achieve a synthesis of styles that have influenced him since he began his art practice, like the figurative and realistic styles of master artists like Michelangelo (whose paintings taught him the importance of expression or action in figures) and Leonardo da Vinci, as well as expressionism and traditional African artistic styles. Studying Rembrandt and Goya taught him the dramatic nature of chiaroscuro, its immediate intimacy, and the use of light.
