David Morier (1705 – 1770) was a Swiss-born artist known for his contributions to 18th-century British military art. Born in Bern, Switzerland, Morier initially trained as a miniaturist and portrait painter. Later, he gained prominence for his vivid and detailed depictions of military scenes.
Morier's career took a significant turn when he relocated to England, where he found patronage within military circles. His early works included portraits of military officers, often set against realistic backgrounds. However, Morier is best known for his series of paintings depicting various battles and military engagements.
His notable series, titled "The Battle of Culloden," painted around 1746, provides a detailed and accurate portrayal of the historic Battle of Culloden in 1746 during the Jacobite Rising. These works are praised for their precision in representing the uniforms, weapons, and terrain of the time.
Morier's contributions to military art were significant, as his works provided invaluable visual records of 18th-century warfare. His attention to detail and meticulous rendering of military uniforms and equipment have made his paintings important historical documents.
Aside from his military works, Morier also created landscapes and portraits, displaying versatility in his artistic talents. His works are held in various collections, including the National Army Museum in London.

David Morier
David Morier was born in Berne, Switzerland in approximately 1705. He came to England in 1743 and obtained the patronage of William, Duke of Cumberland, who became his most frequent sitter. Morier’s most recognizable work is probably An Incident in the Rebellion of 1745 more commonly known as The Battle of Culloden. His work is marked by a meticulous attention to detail in uniform and equipment and he was much in demand as a portraitist by members of the Royal family, army officers and others in aristocratic society. He produced a number of equestrian portraits, of his patron and other senior officers, as well as his greatest series of works, known as the Grenadier Paintings, which document the uniforms and equipment of the Army in the years leading up to the Seven Years’ War. Following Cumberland’s fall from grace, Morier’s career went into decline. He was jailed for debt and sent to Fleet Prison in London in 1769 and died there on January 8, 1770.
