About the Item

French Impressionist Oil on Canvas after a painting by Paul Cézanne titled 'Le Jardinier Vallier' (R950, FWN547). The painting is titled and signed 'élève de beaux arts d' Aix' to the back of the canvas. Presented in a patinated wood frame. A very accomplished rendering by a student of the great artist's thoroughly charming work, very successfully focusing on techniques to bring out the light and shade of the painting and highlight the sitter. Paul Cezanne 1839–1906 'Le Jardinier Vallier' Vallier was the gardener and odd-job man at Cézanne's house near Aix-en-Provence. This is one of six portraits of him, and was probably painted in the summer and autumn of 1906, not long before Cézanne's death in October that year. It follows Cézanne's method of capturing the exact tone of each element – both the shade of colour and its degree of luminosity – in distinct but overlapping brushstrokes, sometimes reflecting slight shifts in the artist’s perspective. Cézanne's ability to combine such elements into a single, unified composition was a very significant influence on the development of Cubism. In this work Cézanne addressed directly the interplay of light and shadow and avoided any great attention to detail. The slight, thin-legged figure of Vallier is without a face and these abstractions continue throughout the canvas and are insignificant in relation to the lush background; he sits in the sun in front of a climbing plant which is in shadow, with the colour of his shirt and pants left bleached. All the subtleties are lavished on the complex, abstract, relationships of the hues in the foliage. There, blues, greens, reds and orange-browns are laid in patches one on top of the other; they almost create a landscape, although it is a landscape with a limited purpose: to throw the figure into full sunlight.
