John Ferneley Jnr Stabled horses Oil on canvas Canvas Size - 20 x 24 in Framed Size - 27 x 31 in Born in about 1815 at Melton Mowbray, he was the eldest son of the important sporting artist John E Ferneley. The latters other two children, Claude Lorraine and Sarah, were also artists. He spent his early life at Elgin Lodge and his father was a major influence on his artistic development and was in all probability his sole teacher. His father took him on trips to London and in 1832 to Durham and York where the younger Ferneley later settled in about 1839, probably because of the large number of patrons in the area. His first work, of a Whipping-in, was engraved and published in the New Sporting Magazine in May 1833 and was followed in the next year by an engraving of a Hunter. John E Ferneley had established a significant career as an equestrian artist in the old English tradition largely due to being a pupil of Ben...

The simplicity of "Aqua Bailer Shell" is deceptive. The upturned pale yellow shell has a beautiful light emanating from its center revealing the delicacy of the shell. It sits upon a deep, rich brown table with its reflection seen in the highly polished surface. The background is delicate aqua colored moiré pattern to give an even more opulent feel while adding to the meditative quality of the painting. The bailer shell can be found in Southeast Asia, from Burma, Thailand and Malaysia, to the South China Sea and the Philippines. "Uscita" takes Inspiration from ancient Italian frescos originally found at the Villa di Livia outside of Rome. The trompe l'oeil frescos were from a subterranean room used for dining. The lush gardens gave the dinner guests the illusion of dining alfresco. Here Pylant took particular notice of the flora and fauna painted over 2000 years ago only to discover they were species that were also present at her then North Carolina studio. The artist adds an architectural element to the gardenscape to suggest a portal from the past into the present. This exploration of the ancient world and its connection to the present is a central theme running through Pylant's work. Carol S. A female and male Goosander bird on ice floes. In the center of the painting there is a smaller opening in the ice covered waters. This painting, by Christian Berg (1893-1976) is quite interesting and unusual for his works. It is signed "Ch. Berg" and dated 1918. Berg is mostly famous for his sculptures which was to become his signum works later in his life. He is known primarily for his abstract artworks. He was educated at the Technical School and Althin's painting school in Stockholm 1911–1914. In the years 1914–1917 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and started with animal painting in the spirit of Bruno Liljefors. Ruggero Panerai (Firenze 1862-1923) Grazing horse Oil on canvas in gilded frame Canvas size 100x70 cm (116x86 cm with frame) Signed at the bottom left Last quarter 19th century Ruggero Panerai was born in Florence on 13 March 1862. He was employed as a carpenter until the age of fifteen and then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, which he attended from 1877 to 1881. His teacher was Giovanni Fattori, who introduced him to the naturalistic painting of landscapes of the Tuscan Maremma and considered him among his most deserving students. Factors' teachings were decisive in orienting the young artist, who adopted the themes and the pictorial technique, updating them with the naturalism flowered in Tuscany through the example of Luigi and Francesco Gioli, Tommasi and Egisto Ferroni. In 1883 he exhibited at the Promotrice in Florence, his impressionism was inspired by the works of Guido Carocci. His painting is also affected by the bourgeois and worldly look of Giuseppe De Nittis and the manner of Vittorio Matteo Corcos who for some years lived in Paris but who returned to Livorno from time to time.
