About the Item

This is a suite of four 12" x 12" canvas panels in Antonio Puri's "Tantra" sculptural painting series of intimately-scaled minimalist round mandala circles built from tiny seed beads adhered to canvas in a range of red hues, creating deep texture. This series is comprised of 100 total works is a meditative, spiritual group of works that draw on the artist's Buddhist practices he learned as a child growing up near Buddhist monks in India. A selection of Puri's "Tantra" paintings were exhibited in the exhibition, "Geometric Objective" at Massey Klein Gallery in New York City, and in "Tantric Explosion" in Bogota, Colombia, where the artist currently lives and works. Each is titled on the back. There are 24 paintings available, and they work well clustered in groupings of all sizes. Note that this lot is a grouping of four separate 12" x 12" panels, and that the photos here are a representative. Please contact me if you would like to see photos of additional panels. With a vision of paintings that literally break free of the canvas, Blady + Van Mil invented moulage (molded collage) through experimentation in the early days of the pandemic. It became their way of holding onto positivity as the enormity of the crisis was revealed. Collage captured the idea that many small actions add up to new hope. Moulding the canvas – allowing it to rise and flow – gave momentum to that feeling. Also propelling this new technique was the artists’ desire to reinvent the preciousness embedded in the fine arts paradigm. To create each moulage, they purposely cut up many of their own prized works into small pieces. Professional collaborators, married for 40 years, Blady + Van Mil always start with a big idea and play together to see where it might go, accepting both success and failure as drivers of progress. “In a year of turmoil and division, we realized we couldn’t change other people’s mindset, just our own. We began by dismantling our past works – with scissors – and were set free.” Annette Blady...
