About the Item
Antonio Puri's "Tantra in Blue" sculptural painting is one of 100 intimately-scaled minimalist round mandala circles built from tiny glass seed beads adhered to canvas in a range of blue and green hues, creating deep texture. There are 3 paintings/sculptures available, and they work particularly well clustered in groupings. Each is signed, dated, and titled on the back. They are from the "Tantra" series, a meditative, spiritual group of works that draw on the artist's Buddhist practices the artist learned as a child growing up near Buddhist monks in India.
"I am interested in comparing connections between my eastern roots and my western experiences. I embrace the possibility that we can exist in a world free from labels." - Antonio Puri
Puri was born in Chandigarh, Punjab, India and raised in the Himalayas around Buddhist monks before studying at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Coe College, and the University of Iowa. He established his studio in Philadelphia where he practiced for many years before relocating to Bogotá, Colombia. During this time, Puri completed several artist residencies all over the world, including in New York, Hungary, Bulgaria, Colombia, South Africa, Serbia, Mauritius, India, Denmark, Trinidad and Tobago, and Romania. Puri’s range of geographical and cultural experiences are embedded in his work, where he commonly explores the relationships between his eastern and western cultural connections.
Puri has exhibited his work all over the world, including at the Museo de Arte del Tolima in Colombia; Sundaram Tagore Gallery Singapore; Government Museum and Art Gallery Chandigarh, India; Art Depot, Austria; La Cometa Gallery, Bogota; Museo Casa Conde Rul, Mexico; The Guild, NY; Nu Art Gallery in Santa Fe; Twelve Gates, Philadelphia; Philadelphia Art Alliance; Noyes Museum, NJ; Essl Museum, Austria; Hammond Museum, NY; Queens Museum, NY; Sundaram Tagore Gallery, NY; Gallery Espace, New Delhi; Edsviks Konsthall, Stockholm; MOP Gallery, Sydney; Musee du Chateau, France; Corcoran Gallery in DC; and Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, among others. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, India; Punjab Lalit Kala Academy, Chandigarh, India; National Gallery of Modern Art, Mauritius; Noyes Museum, NJ; Albertina Museum, Austria; Musee du Chateau, France; Museo de Arte del Tolima, Colombia; and Bergen Museum of Art and Science, NJ.

- Happy Party 45" x 30"Located in Toronto, ONWith a vision of paintings that literally break free of the canvas, Blady + Van Mil invented moulage (molded collage) through experimentation in the early days of the pandemic. It became their way of holding onto positivity as the enormity of the crisis was revealed. Collage captured the idea that many small actions add up to new hope. Moulding the canvas – allowing it to rise and flow – gave momentum to that feeling. Also propelling this new technique was the artists’ desire to reinvent the preciousness embedded in the fine arts paradigm. To create each moulage, they purposely cut up many of their own prized works into small pieces. Professional collaborators, married for 40 years, Blady + Van Mil always start with a big idea and play together to see where it might go, accepting both success and failure as drivers of progress. “In a year of turmoil and division, we realized we couldn’t change other people’s mindset, just our own. We began by dismantling our past works – with scissors – and were set free.” Annette Blady...Category
