Mimmo Rotella
Mimmo Rotella was an Italian artist and poet who is best known for collages made from torn advertising posters in a medium that he called "double décollages."
Rotella was born on October 7, 1918, in Catanzaro, Italy, and studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples before moving to Rome in 1945. There, he became associated with the Lettrism movement and — along with Raymond Hains, Jacque Villeglé and François Dufrêne — became known as one of "Les Affichistes," an artist group credited as the forefathers of street art.
Rotella's first solo exhibition was held in 1951 in at the Galleria Chiurazzi in Rome, and later that same year, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship with which he traveled to Kansas City University. In 1961, he was invited by Pierre Restany to join the New Realism movement, whose members included Yves Klein, Arman and Jean Tinguely. In 1964, he represented Italy at the Venice Biennale. He died on January 8, 2006, in Milan, Italy, at the age of 87.

Gianni Versace
The signature extravagance of legendary fashion designer Gianni Versace — forever aligned with glamour, sex, celebrity and spectacle — can overshadow the Italian couturier’s broad and deep engagement with history and culture. Today, his vintage dresses and gowns, handbags, sunglasses and other accessories look astonishingly fresh and freshly relevant.
More than any designer before him, Versace mined celebrity, music and Pop art for inspiration, and his subversive, maximalist and unabashedly seductive designs infused high fashion with an entirely new ethos. “I don’t believe in good taste,” he once explained. Instead, he had a sexy good time with fashion — as he did with life.
Gianni Versace was born in Calabria, Italy. His mother was a successful dressmaker who employed more than 40 seamstresses. As a child, little Gianni marveled at her workshop, which would become a university of sorts, where he learned the exceptional construction techniques that were at the foundation of his creative expression.
In 1972, at age 25, he moved to Milan to work in fashion. He launched his first collection — and his label — in 1978, with his older brother Santo managing the business concerns. Soon, sister Donatella, whom Gianni dressed and took to discos when she was still a child, joined the family venture, where she had a creative role and managed enormously popular ready-to-wear lines such as Versus.
Vintage Versace — and Gianni Versace Couture, which debuted in 1989 — has become catnip for modern fashion enthusiasts who seek out the now-iconic house codes that originated in the designs of the 1980s and 1990s. His glamorous and seductive apparel — the clingy skirts and slender, strappy party dresses, as well as the erotic magazine ads that publicized them — looms large, but Versace’s art and historical influences were also vast.
Versace was an art collector, and he took on commissions to create costumes for theatrical performances during the 1980s and spoke of looking to numerous cultures for inspiration. The New York Times noted in 1997 that the fashion industry “is now driven by contemporary culture because Mr. Versace made it that way.”
Insiders consider his 1991/1992 Autumn/Winter runway show — which featured supermodels Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista lip-synching George Michael’s “Freedom” — as the moment when the two worlds of fashion and pop culture became one, changing both forever.
Versace's adventurous spirit of design resulted in his creating jewel-toned prints rooted in Grecian motifs, Etruscan symbols, the Italian Baroque and Andy Warholʼs Marilyn Monroe. There were slinky dresses in Oroton, his patented chain-mail textile that draped like satin, and leather bondage ensembles. Sex sold, for both women and men. Wrote the late curator Richard Martin, “[Versace] became the standard-bearer of gay men’s fashion because he eschewed decorum and designed for desire.”
Following Versace’s tragic murder in 1997, Donatella took over the role of artistic director and continued to evolve the house codes with a twist of her feminine and feminist perspective. Today, Santo Versace is chief executive officer of Versace and Donatella is its chief creative officer.

Born in 1918 in Catanzaro into a middle-class family, in 1945 he moved to Rome where he frequented the young avant-garde made up of the exponents of Gruppo Forma 1 (Carla Accardi, Ugo Attardi, Pietro Consagra, Piero Dorazio, Mino Guerrini, Achille Perilli, Antonio Sanfilippo and Giulio Turcato). After his figurative beginnings and early experiments, he began to paint abstract-geometric pictures inspired by the works of Vasilij Kandinskij and Piet Mondrian. In 1950, he exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles. In February 1951, he participated in the exhibition 'Abstract and Concrete Art in Italy - 1951' organised by Palma Bucarelli and Giulio Carlo Argan at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome. In 1951 he was awarded a scholarship by the Fulbright Foundation, which allowed him to go to the United States as an 'Artist in Residence' at the University of Kansas City. In 1952, he held his second solo exhibition at the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art in Kansas City. For Harvard University, he completed a performance of epistaltic poetry. In the autumn he returned to Rome, devoting himself to phonetic production. In 1953, he realised that the pictorial medium was no longer a suitable medium for the expression of his poetics and suddenly had what he called a 'Zen enlightenment': the discovery of the advertising poster as an artistic expression. This is how décollage was born: Rotella took pieces of posters torn off the street from the walls of Rome and glued them to the canvas, then reworked them in the studio, adopting the collage of the Cubists and contaminating them with elements borrowed from an informal matrix close to Hans Arp and Jean Fautrier and with the Dadaist ready-made. Still in 1955, Carlo Cardazzo organised an exhibition entirely dedicated to décollage and retro d'affiches in his Galleria del Naviglio in Milan. His works are exhibited in London, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA). In 1958 he took part in the exhibition 'New Trends in Italian Art' organised by Lionello Venturi at the Rome branch of the Rome-New York Art Foundation. The following year he met the French critic Pierre Restany, with whom he began a long association. In 1960 he joined the Nouveau Réalisme of which Pierre Restany was the theoretician and which brought together, among others, Yves Klein, Spoerri, Tinguely, César, Arman, Christo and Niki de Saint Phalle. Along with décollages, Rotella also executed assemblages and ready-mades with objects purchased from junk dealers such as bottle caps, ropes, wicker baskets and pieces of fabric. In May 1961 he exhibited in the historic exhibition À 40° au-dessus de Dada, curated by Restany at Galerie J in Paris. In 1962, the same French gallery hosted the series of works inspired by the world of cinema on the occasion of the 'Cinecittà' exhibition. His décollages from the early 1960s are characterised by the presence of stars of the silver screen and music such as Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor, Marlon Brando and Elvis Presley. During this last exhibition, his work was compared with artists from France (Arman, Christo, Raymond Hains, Yves Klein, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely), Italy (Enrico Baj, Gianfranco Baruchello, Tano Festa, Mario Schifano), and the USA (Peter Agostini...Category
