Eugène Galien-Laloue "Theatre du Chatelet" Watercolor and Gouache

About the Item

Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) "Theatre du Chatelet" watercolor and gouache on paper signed 'E Galien Laloue' lower left, within a giltwood and gesso carved frame and behind a protective glass. The finely painted gouache depicting a Parisian street scene of the Théâtre du Châtelet is a theatre and opera house, located along the quays of the river Seine in the place du Châtelet, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, France. One of two theatres built on the site of a châtelet, a small castle or fortress, it was designed by Gabriel Davioud at the request of Baron Haussmann between 1860 and 1862. Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) was a French artist of French-Italian parents and was born in Paris on December 11, 1854. He was a populariser of street scenes, usually painted in autumn or winter. His paintings of the early 1900s accurately represent the era in which he lived: a happy, bustling Paris, la Belle Époque, with horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and its first omnibuses. Galien-Laloue's works are valued not only for their contribution to 20th century art, but for the actual history, which they document. His work can be seen at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Louvier; Musée des Beaux-Arts, La Rochelle; Mulhouse, France. A typical Galien-Laloue painting depicts sidewalks and avenues crowded with people or tourists mingling before the capital's monuments. He also painted the landscapes of Normandy and Seine-et-Marne, as well as military scenes he was commissioned to produce in 1914. The Republic of France selected Galien-Laloue to work as a 'war artist,' both during the Franco-Prussian War and World War I, chiefly in watercolor. Galien-Laloue was in exclusive contract with one gallery and used 6 other names: "L. Dupuy", "Juliany", "E. Galiany", "Lievin" "Dumoutier" and "P. Mattig". • 19th Century Framed Landscape Oil Painting Signed L. Dupuy for E. Galien-Laloue
    By Eugene Galien-Laloue
    Located in Dallas, TX
Decorate a study, living room or den with this beautiful and colorful antique painting! Painted in France circa 1890, the artwork on canvas is set in the original carved gilt wood frame and illustrates a picturesque, countryside scene in rural France with a church and farmhouses in the background, a river on the side and a peasant woman in the foreground; the painting is signed in the lower left corner by the artist, L. Dupuy, one of the pseudonyms of Eugene Galien-Laloue (1854-1941). The 19th century pastoral painting is in excellent condition with rich, realistic colors in a post impressionist style; throughout the painting, the viewer can get a sense of the artist's expertise in the rendering of space, light and a beautifully hazy atmosphere. We thank Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this work, which appears in his archives of the artist. Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) was a French artist of French-Italian parents. He was a popularizer of landscapes, marine and street scenes, usually those illustrating autumn or winter settings. His paintings of the early 1900s accurately represent the era in which he lived: a happy, bustling Paris during la Belle Époque. His paintings regularly include horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and its first omnibuses. Galien-Laloue's works are valued not only for their contribution to 20th century art, but for the actual historical content which they document. His work can be seen at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Louvier, Musée des Beaux-Arts, La Rochelle, Mulhouse, France. Some artists or writers are content to have a pseudonym so as to disguise their work. Eugène Galien Laloue was particularly adept at establishing many identities, since over the course of his career he worked under three main pseudonyms: J. Lievin – after a soldier he met during the Franco-Prussian war, E. Galiany – an Italianized version of his own names, and L. Dupuy – after Dupuy Léon who lived in his same area. Even his name “Galien” is questionable, since on occasion he spelled it with one “l” and on his birth certificate...
