Charlotte Perriand Cansado bench daybed Steph Simon France 1959

About the Item

Fantastic patinated early slatted bench designed by Charlotte Perriand, 1959 France, for the homes of the Miferma mining company in the city of Cansado, Mauritania. This bench comes with recently fabric upholstered foam cushions for a more comfortable use. These cushions have a modular function, they can be used as a bench or a daybed upon clients wishes. The bench has the rare drawer which can be turned to the other side(it is screwed on the metal frame) so it can be used right or left sided. The drawer has white Formica on top with heavy wear and overall a raw patinated look. The previous owner choose to let this bench complete original in its patina , so the black painted metal frame has a quite industrial rough look as well as the slats and drawer have been left as original as possible so you can see it has patina and is old and original. The massive wooden slats are nice clean but have been left in their patina as well… Nothing overrestorated here … Minimal functionalism Perriand Design with an very nice pure look overall.

Charlotte Perriand designed furniture made of anodized aluminum and chromium-plated steel, showing it at the 1927 "Salon d'Automne" in Paris. After meeting Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand worked with him and Pierre Jeanneret until 1937. In 1930 the Union Des Artistes Modernes (UAM) was founded in Paris, a group that viewed itself as a countermovement challenging such establishment organizations as the "Salon d'Automne" and also advocated Art Deco and Modernism. From 1931 Charlotte Perriand showed her own work solo there. In 1937 Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret collaborated on designing a mountain chalet of sheet aluminum, which they showed at the "Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne" and later they came up with plans for prefab houses made of aluminum. In 1940 Charlotte Perriand became a design consultant to the Japanese Board...
