First edition Mart Stam for Thonet B262 Armchair c. 1930’s

About the Item

First edition Mart Stam for Thonet B262 Armchair c. 1930’s. Stam is regarded by many as the inventor of the tubular steel cantilever chair. His design was the inspiration for Mies van der Rohe's famous MR10 chair. Although Stam was a functionalist, his motivation was fueled by his left wing political convictions. He wanted to create a chair, not for the elite, but for the workers. This chair has been used intensely for decades, yet it is still sturdy and has obtained a wonderful patina over time. The chrome shows signs of rust and the paint is beautifully scratched and eroded.
