Presented is an 1894 signed first edition goupil-gravure print by Heywood Hardy (1842-1933). The engraving was printed in Paris and published by Boussod Valadon & Co. Publishers, the successors to Goupil & Co. Designed as a companion to After the Drive, Hardy’s On the Moors (Dogging) depicts three hunters and their two dogs hunting ducks. The youngest of the three men is shooting his gun as the dogs excitedly wait to chase after the bird. This print is one of only 75 artist’s proofs and has been signed by the artist in pencil at the lower left corner of the print’s margin.

Very Large Ophtalmotrope

What is an ophthalmotrope? An ophthalmotrope is an apparatus for demonstrating the movements of the eye and the action of the different muscles which produce them, consisting essentially of a model eyeball to which are attached strings and pulleys to duplicate the line force of the muscles.
We think this example is most likely French from the early 20th century. The base is marble with paw feet. It’s also quite large at well over 3 foot tall. This instrument is very complete. It also includes additional parts to set the mechanics up in a different way. In the pictures above the strings are attached to a keyboard. The alternative replaces the keyboard with string guide with a dozen hanging tubular weights. This is one of the largest and most decorative examples we have seen. I have only seen pictures of ophthalmotropes and never one this fine and complete. It’s as rare and impressive show piece.

This rare and remarkable piece begins with a backdrop composed of beautifully, handwritten love letters from the 1800s. There are three scrolls made up of additional love letters, sealed with red wax from the 19th century scattered around two antique books. The open book on the left, was written during the time of the 30 Year War, 1618-1648 in France, when the Treaty of Westphalia changed the map of Europe. During this period, the church attempted to begin marriage registrations and within this written relic, there are numerous marriage entries with names and dates. The book is bound by animal hide from the 12th-13th century and when it is unfolded, it becomes a giant piece of parchment filled with faded ink handwriting in mysterious Old French. The closed book on the right is from Louis XIII - XVI era and is bound in antique animal hide parchment from the 12th-13th century. When the animal hide is unfurled, the inside is adorned in faded handwritten ink in peculiar Old French. Inside the journal is elegante handwriting in ink but it is difficult to identify the cryptic content. This journal was possibly written by an unknown noble figure or bishop. When you think of the life of Saint John the Baptist (or Baptiste as it is spelled here) then you can only come to the conclusion that in fact he was one of the most important human beings in the history of the world in general and of Christianity in particular. Saint John is sometimes depicted with a lamb to symbolise his recognition of Jesus as the Son of God. When John baptised Jesus in the River Jordan he said 'Behold, the Lamb of God'. In this case the sculptor chose to portray a standing lamb which is a rare feature and this antique was obviously carved in the Baroque Style. This Style is less detailed (or some would say 'more naive') than for example the Renaissance Style, but there are many collectors who love and collect this Style.
