Map of Ireland Titled "Hiberniae Britannicae Insulae Nova Descriptio Irland"

About the Item

Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was a cartographer, geographer and maker from Antwerp in the Spanish Netherlands. He created the first modern atlas titled in Latin Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World). The publication of the atlas, in 1570, is considered to be the beginning of the golden age of Dutch cartography. The present example, in Latin, was probably published in the late 17th century or early 18th century. Framed and glazed on both sides so the back of the sheet is visible.
