19th Century Rare Sang de Boeuf, Oxblood Gourd Vase with Ears, Copper Rings
About the Item
From the antique brass oxidized copper rings that hang from the ears, to the gourd shape and body, this is a wonderful example of a highly collectible sang de boeuf, oxblood vase.
A late 19th century (circa 1890s) Chinese copper red-glazed gourd base is from the Qing dynasty, the last imperial dynasty in China, which lasted from 1644 -- 1912. Chinese copper red-glazed gourd vases refer to a specific type of ceramic ware produced in China, characterized by their shape and distinctive red glaze. Gourd bases are vessels that resemble the shape of a gourd or bottle and were commonly used as decorative objects or as vases for other items.
The mark is Qianlong. The tiny little blue dots that are visible in the images are found sometimes among Chinese copper red-glazed vases. They are commonly referred to as "blue spots" or "blue splashes." These spots are a result of a chemical reaction that occurs during the firing process of the copper red glaze. When the copper red glaze is exposed to certain levels of oxygen, it can create areas of reduced oxygen, known as reducing atmospheres, within the kiln. In these reducing atmospheres, the copper in the glaze can turn blue or even green, resulting in the appearance of blue spots or splashes on the surface of the vase (they are highly appreciated by collectors).
Chinese copper red-glazed gourd vases were popular during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties. They were often used as decorative objects, and their elegant shape and vibrant red glaze made them highly prized by collectors. The gourd shape was symbolic in Chinese culture, representing longevity, good fortune, and prosperity.
