Blanc de Chine Seated Guanyin Sculpture, c. 1900
About the Item
As the embodiment of compassion, Guanyin is the most beloved enlightened being in China. Known as the Goddess of Mercy, she is the female bodhisattva form taken by Avalokiteśvara in eastern Buddhism. Guanyin can take many forms depending on the devotee’s needs and is often invoked to encourage fertility or alleviate suffering. This breathtaking Blanc de Chine sculpture of Guanyin depicts the goddess draped in flowing robes and wearing an exquisite necklace of the Dharma wheel, representing the teachings of the Buddha. With a full-moon face, downcast eyes, and a faint smile, this impressive white porcelain Guanyin commands her surroundings with calm, serenity, and elegance.

The handle is carved to resemble a thin branch, which forks to either side of the teapot bearing long, slender leaves.
