Wayne Salge
"Zeke & Zach 11/18" Abstract Figurative Bronze sculpture of a man and horse

About the Item

The historic tradition of cast bronze provides a contemporary avenue for the creation of Wayne Salge’s abstracted human and animal figures. Thoroughly modern and distinctly impressionistic, his signature style is recognized by long lines, sharp angles, smooth planes and textured surfaces finished with intricate patinas. Working in wax or clay to create each original, the artist then follows each piece through the foundry process in northeastern Colorado near his home and studio. His strong foundation in the arts includes a lengthy career in graphic design and illustration plus college classes in sculpture, painting and art history along with workshops in bronze casting and stone carving. He is an elected member of the National Sculpture Society and an associate member of the National Sculptors Guild. Salge states “My bronze sculptures encompass human and animal forms which I depict in my own abstracted style: a Salge blend of classical and contemporary elements. I utilize lines, shapes and textures to reveal body movement, gesture or stillness. I am not concerned with precise anatomy or plausible function; instead I focus on the expression of attitude or emotion.”

I first realized my love for visual storytelling when I began producing and directing television shows. Starting with the writer’s script, my palette was everything seen through the camera’s lens: actors, movement, light, and mood. Shot by shot, I wove together these images into two-dimensional dramas. I longed, however, to tell my own stories, to move beyond words and pictures, and to explore themes that ignited my imagination. My sculptures and assemblages became the three-dimensional stories I wanted to tell; stories about relationships, childhood, time passage, marriage, motherhood, and secrets never told. My sculpting process always begins with a tiny bit of clay to which I add more, never knowing how any piece will end. I don’t use models...
