Gillie and Marc Schattner
The elephant was just pearfect 2/40 - playful, contemporary, bronze sculpture

2022

About the Item

The noble African giant—the elephant has long been a favourite subject for the delightful art of Gillie and Marc. Gillie grew up in Zambia where she acquired a deep appreciation for the beauty and majesty of wildlife. As a child she sadly witnessed an elephant being killed. That image left an indelible mark on her memory which, years later in partnership with her husband Marc has found its way into their artwork. In this piece the elephant, cast in bronze, is sitting on top of a large gold-coloured pear—an ancient symbol of abundance, fertility and longevity. (Edition 2 of 40) “Their mission is to use their work as a platform to continue spreading awareness about endangerment, which will ultimately lead to change and save species from extinction.” Gillie and Marc The artistic couple enjoy a rare partnership as they are married and have worked together as artists for more than 25 years. Gillie and Marc are passionate environmental activists who have used their sculptures, paintings, and photographs to celebrate and save endangered animals. Every year, they donate thousands of dollars earned from their art sales to many international animal charities. Their work is exhibited and sold throughout the world.

  • Spirit of Gravity - emotive, nude, female, figurative, bronze statuette
    By Richard Tosczak
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
In this thoughtful sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak, the gestures of a female figure, head bent, arms wrapped, are captured in bronze. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and green-black patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture. This piece is number three in an edition of eight. “The ineffable, vital qualities of the human spirit (is what I’m trying to communicate.)” - Richard Tosczak Born in Belgium, Richard Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...

  • Arethusa immerses herself in the Alpheus river - figurative, bronze statuette
    By Richard Tosczak
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
This large bronze statuette of a reclining nude with legs outstretched, arms tucked in and straining to sit up was created rapidly in gestures that verge on abstraction. The modern and dynamic formalism that departs from realism allows the viewer to focus on emotive qualities of pure form. This is number 1 in an edition of 8. Tosczak is a Belgian-born, Edmonton-based figurative sculptor. He studied philosophy and modernist sculpture, working in steel, at the University of Alberta where a number of the professors had a strong affiliation with Sir Anthony Caro and Clement Greenberg. Richard pursued further artistic training in the Loire Valley with Martine Vaugel...
