About the Item
Signed underneath.
This carved stone sculpture by Brighton Sango (1958 - 1995) is from a private collection. The family owns a quality collection of Shona sculpture. They purchased each piece directly from the artists in the 1980s while visiting Zimbabwe, Africa. This piece, with others, has been in their collection since 1989.
Like other artists Brighton joined the Tengenenge sculpture community in Tengenenge, Zimbabwe with many of the leading sculptors. He was an be an important member of the second generation of sculptors. The inspiration he brought to the community was different from the original group of founding members, as Brighton started to explore themes of abstraction.
With little training, Brighton made the decision to give voice to his very different ideas, while not influenced by artists around him. With ease, Brighton seemed to carve in stone with flat forms and shapes usually found in metal sculpture.
