Sage Barnes’s paintings navigate the space between the surreal and the real. Barnes is known for portraits that depict figurative busts with faces obscured by vibrant floral arrangements, neon smiley faces, or thick material explosions of blocked colour and gestural marks. His canvases call to mind the Surrealist works of René Magritte. Often incorporating three-dimensional elements, his paintings utilise such materials as physical paintbrushes, flowers, and painted-over frames, giving his already surrealistic works an even more illusionistic quality. He attended the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles before pursuing art as a full-time career. Barges has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami.
