(after) Gustav Klimt
Woman and Young Lady - 1910s

1919

About the Item

Two Lying Female Nudes (Woman and Young Lady) is a vintage, beautiful, and rare collotype from “Gustav Klimt: Fünfundzwanzig Handzeichnungen”, a limited-edition collection of 25 monochrome and two-color collotypes after drawings by Gustav Klimt. Published by Gilhofer and Ranschburg, Vienna, July 1919, just one year after Klimt's death, with a sophisticated technique to perfectly reproduce Klimt's pencil strokes. Edition of 500 numbered prints, with the first group numbered I-X and the second numbered 11-500. This is a beautiful plate representing two lying female nudes, one woman embracing another, realized with a very fresh and fluid line. Signed on stone on the lower right margin. In excellent conditions, including an ivory-colored cardboard passepartout with a light water stain on the lower right that we wanted to keep in its original state(cm 40 x 59.3). Original Title: Zwei liegende Akte (Frau und junges Mädchen). The original pencil sketch is held at the Lederer Collection, in Vienna, together with the other original drawings of the portfolio. All the works were printed posthumously, one year after Klimt’s death, by the Kunstanstalt Max Jaffé, a Viennese specialist in fine art collotypes. The complex collotype printing process perfectly rendered Klimt’s remarkably spontaneous drawing style. This dichromate-based photographic process was invented in 1856. The gelatin plates required a very delicate preparation involving light exposure, washing, and drying. Collotype plates could not be re-used: the limited-edition prints from colloid ink were stable and they had no chance of fading like other photographic processes of the time. Later on, commercial lithography replaced this technique, which has now become nearly forgotten. The importance of this portfolio lies in the aesthetic achievement of capturing the variations of Klimt's style between 1898 and 1917. These drawings of women are suffused by a veil of sexuality, well-accepted by the Viennese society. Fünfundzwanzig Handzeichnungen is erotic material that would circulate privately among Vienna's upper-class men. The emotional fluidity of Klimt’s erotic drawings created and still creates an intense psychological reaction in the viewer. Fünfundzwanzig Handzeichnungen reveals the female world in Klimt's eyes. He meticulously observes both nubile young girls and craggy old women. His drawings demonstrate his unstoppable creative energy and his expertise in the technique. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist who has died requires a licence for export regardless of the work’s market price. The shipping may require additional handling days to require the licence according to the final destination of the artwork.

  • Bust of Nero - Original Etching by P. Fontana After B. Nocchi - 1821
    By Pietro Fontana
    Located in Roma, IT
“Busto di Nerone” (Bust of Nerone) is a beautiful black and white burin and etching on paper, realized by the Italian artist Pietro Fontana, after Bernardino Nocchi as the inscriptions on plates on lower margins report “Bernardino Nocchi delineò./ Pietro Fontana incise Roma”. This original print is numbered on plate in Roman numerals on higher margin: “Tom II. /Tav. XVII" and is a plate from the series "Illustrazioni de'Monumenti scelti Borghesiani già esistenti nella Villa sul Pincio (..)date ora per la prima volta in luce dal cav. Gio. Gherardo De Rossi e da Stefano Piale sotto la guida di Vincenzo Feoli", by Ennio Quirino Visconti, published by Stamperia de Romanis in Rome, 1821. This old master’s original prints shows a precious piece of the Borghese's collection, the marble bust of the Roma Emperor, Nerone, realized with neoclassical style and a wise touch In excellent conditions with some light signs of the time, with some sporadic minor stains along the margins above all on the lower, and a usual yellowing of the paper on the lower margin, this wonderful burin has preserved still today his fresh impression. Illustrazioni de' Monumenti scelti Borghesiani This collection in two volumes is a beautifully detailed catalog of classical sculptures collected by Prince Borghese (1730-1800) in his Villa on the Pincio. Ennio Quirino Visconti (1751 - 1818) wrote the texts that accompany the large branches depicting. To these writings, which were available by the son of the illustrious archaeologist, the publishers added only a few illustrations relating to some minor monument of which copper had already been engraved. The engraved title-plate are signed by draughtsmen like Agostino Tofanelli, Stefano Tofanelli, Bernardino Nocchi, Domenico de Angelis or Teodoro Matteini, and by engravers Pietro Fontana Veneto, P. Vitali, Pietro Bettelini, Giovanni Folo Veneto, Giovanni Brunetti da Ravenna, Giovanni Ottaviani, Francesco Cecchini, Gio. Batta. Leonetti, Girolamo Carattoni, Domenico Cunego, Luigi Cunego, Alessandro Mochetti, Luigi Pizzi, Angelo Campanella or Giacomo Bossi. There are plates representing ancient bas-reliefs, sarcophagi, of mythological subjects, the Borghese Vase, portrait busts, a vase on an altar, two statues of Amor; and two modern statues, by Bernini (the Apollo and Daphne, and the David). «Très bel ouvrage» writes Brunet, «Grand ouvrage, le seul qui mérite, parmi ceux sur la villa Borgese, de figurer dans le chapitre aux Galeries et Collections» Vinet said, looking at this plate. Pietro Fontana (Bassano Romano,1762 – Rome, 1837) The Italian artist and engraver, Pietro Fontana was active in Rome and specialized in subjects dealing with the Vatican and the Papacy. He started his career as a student of Raffaello...

  • Woman Walking Away from Gentleman
    By Rudolf Bauer
    Located in New Orleans, LA
A well dressed woman takes leave of a gentleman. Rudolf Bauer was born in 1889, in Lindenwald, Germany-Poland. The son of a wealthy engineer, Bauer became an essential part of the avant-garde movement and the birth of non-objective art in the early 1920's. Bauer began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin in 1905, where he learned the fundamentals and produced beautifully stylized figurative drawings. In 1912, Bauer met Herwarth Walden, a promoter of the avant-garde movement and founder of Der Sturm Art Gallery. Bauer became a member of Der Sturm, and was represented in group exhibitions along with Kandinsky, Picasso, Chagall, Klee et al. By 1922, Bauer had participated in 80 Der Sturm exhibitions in Belgium, Denmark, Great Britain, Italy, et al. In 1917, Bauer had his first one-man show at Der Sturm Gallery, exhibiting 120 works. By 1921, with his many one-man and group exhibitions, and his significant publications of his theories on art, Bauer became Germany's leading abstract expressionist painter. In 1929, Bauer founded his own private museum, Das Geistreich-Bauer (The Realm of the Spirit). In 1933, Hitler became Chancellor of the German Republic and with that modern art was branded as "sub-human". Walden closed Der Sturm and fled Germany. The purge of modern artists and curators began, but at the same time Bauer was having his work exhibited at the new Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Despite Hitler's proclamations of the "degeneracy" of modern art, Bauer continued his mission, the free expression in art, writing dictums and creating art. Meanwhile, Solomon R. Guggenheim, the famous American philanthropist, had been acquiring Bauer's work; so many pieces in fact that that he could no long fit his work within the confines of his residential suite at the Plaza Hotel in New York. In 1936, Guggenheim decided to exhibit his entire collection of Bauer's work in one venue, at the Gibbes Memorial Art Gallery in Charleston, SC. Later that year, the famous Jeu de Paume, a division of the Louvre, in Paris, honored Bauer with a one-man exhibition. As a result of the show, the Louvre purchased one of Bauer's oil paintings. Upon his return from the show at Jeu de Paume, and despite the fact he was not Jewish, Bauer was arrested and sent to a concentration camp. Filippo Marinetti...
