About the Item
The etching (Road to Calvary) is signed in pencil.
It's in an usually spare drawing style but one that Nagler did use occasionally. Here it emphasizes the meagerness of the scene. The figures are hardly dressed and my have been abused. The Christ figure (with halo), as I understand it, walked to his crucifixion. But the tone here is so reminiscent of the that journey. The two men on the left appear to be criminals. The poor donkey is bedraggled.
There's a crease in the lower left margin.
Massachusetts-born Fred Nagler studied at the Art Students League from 1914 to 1917, with George Bridgeman and Robert Henri, and eventually became a member of the Board of Control. He taught at the Connecticut College for Women, and after the death of Grant Wood, the University of Iowa State, and also the Eastman School of Art. He worked in New York State and in Texas.
