James Rosenquist
Although he insisted that he and his fellow Pop artists developed their art-making styles independently, American painter James Rosenquist belonged at the table with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
Known for his distinctive use of visual montage, Rosenquist produced large, vibrantly colored tableaux marked by fragmentation and overlap. He often employed familiar motifs and objects drawn from popular contemporary culture — hot dogs, lipstick tubes, American flags — which he manipulated to form disorienting compositions whose constituent elements are nearly unrecognizable.
Born in North Dakota to Swedish parents, Rosenquist was encouraged to pursue painting by his mother, who was also an artist. He studied painting for two years at the University of Minnesota, but dropped out at the age of 21 to attend the Art Students League in New York on a scholarship. A job as a billboard painter in the late 1950s set him up to pursue his signature style, which borrowed its bold graphics and remixed kitschy aesthetic from the visual vocabulary of advertising. Works like Flamingo Capsule (1983) embody his trademark visual dissonance, drawing cigarette-ad motifs into conversation with stripes from the American flag and aluminum foil wrappers.
In addition to enormous paintings, Rosenquist created drawings, prints and collages. The 2011 lithograph The Memory Continues but the Clock Disappears is a montage of melting clocks and confetti, all submerged in a pool of water. While wryly hinting at the inevitability of decay and deterioration — suggesting that life is a ticking clock — the composition also alludes to Salvador Dalí's signature motif, the defining symbol of Surrealism. Such compositions demonstrate how Rosenquist masterfully combined seemingly incongruous elements into a harmonious and poetic whole.

The poster was designed by Cristos Gianakos, who was also a professor at SVA, and the show was curated by Felice Wender, the director of Dayon's Gallery 12 in Minneapolis. The invitation states that "after completing its New York debut, the show will open at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in January 4, 1971 and continue through January 29, 1971. In May, 1971, Dayton's Gallery 12, Minneapolis, Minnesota will exhibit the new Rauschenberg works..." The text on this invitation additionally states that Rauschenberg said in a written statement about these works: "The image and the words cooperate to construct a flat re-reading of the facts plus familiar passing insignificancies that control our day. Information, originally engaged in a daily rhetorical screen to eliminate as much direct feeling and response as possible, re-exposed to encourage consideration..." - Golden Gate BridgeLocated in New York, NYPeter Saul Golden Gate Bridge, 1968 Five color lithograph on German etching paper with deckled edges with collectors press chop mark Hand signed, titled and numbered "Artist Proof" lower front; also bears Collector's Press chop mark, and chop mark of master printer Tony Ko Frame Included: floated and framed in the original wood frame Provenance: from the Estate of the legendary California artist, Roy DeForest Accompanied by a copy of the publisher's documentation sheet (see image) This work is one of three hand signed Artist's Proofs, aside from the regular edition of 50. It is one of Peter Saul's most celebrated prints; the not so subtle at all symbolism speaks for itself, such as the gigantic dollar sign and wagging tongue (money talks loudly), set against San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate bridge. This print does not often appear on the market, as so many from this edition are already in the permanent collection of major museums and institutions. Other examples of this work were featured in the exhibitions: "Print Retrospective, 1966-2010", from September 16 – December 22, 2011 at the Carl Solway Gallery in Ohio, and "Peter Saul: Prints and Drawings, 1960 -1975", from February 26 – April 11, 2009, at The George Adams Gallery...Category
