About the Item

Icare- Icarus Linocut in colors, 1972 Unsigned Stamped in ink on verso: "Imprimerie Arnéra" Archives/ Non Signé Provenance: Arnéra Archive Frederick Mulder, Ltd. Watermark: Arches France An impression printed in peach, orange, red and black on Arches paper. Printed by Imprimerie Arnéra. Condition: Excellent Verdet's linocuts and wider work in various media often portray figures from mythology or from classic literature. In this subject the ancient Greek figure Icarus is depicted. The myth of Icarus says that on escaping from imprisonment on the island of Crete, he had been warned by his father not to fly too close to the sun or sea, as his wings were merely fashioned of wax and feathers. Enthralled by the freedom of flying, he did not heed his father's warning and when flying close to the sun, the wax melted leaving Icarus to fall into the sea that now bears his name, the Icarian sea. This subject can be clearly read as Icarus flying close to the sun, in fact almost clasping it.
