About the Item

This contemporary figural limited edition photograph by Alyssa Fortin depicts the Titan, Theia, of Greek Mythology. Theia, mother of the Sun, the Moon, and of Dawn, is shown wrapped in soft, bright fabrics and falling into her own reflection. The vivid color of her dress is contrasted by the deep, brilliant blue of the water which surrounds her, "Theia Mania" is part of Fortin’s Disruptive Heroines anthology which focuses on narratives of disorder and disruption. In it, she reimagines and rewrites well known stories in which female protagonists, once cursed, defiled and condemned, re-emerge cleansed, rejuvenated and victorious. An edition size of 10, this photograph is printed on Juniper Baryta Rag museum quality archival paper. Each print is individually signed, numbered, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. This photograph is offered unframed. It can be framed by my frame company. We usually do a white wood molding with museum glass. Other options are available. Alyssa Fortin’s extensive scope includes portrait, travel and fine art photography. Known for her intimate black and white portraits and vibrant color travel photographs, Fortin has over the past thirty years focused on capturing powerful images of the everyday lived experiences of those around her. Inspired by the natural, unfiltered beauty of the people and the world we live in, Fortin is a visual storyteller who documents the journey of her subjects, friends and their families from birth, through growth, aging, and even death. Exhilarating, tender, empowering, and sometimes haunting, her photos immortalize the most joyous, loving, hopeful, and at times heartbreaking moments of her subjects’ lives. Her work touches the souls of her subjects and viewers alike, creating timeless connections between image and life. Fortin studied the art of black and white film photography while earning a BFA at the University of Florida and later a Master's Degree in Art Education at the University of Georgia. For several years following that she taught photography and fine arts. These courses included workshops in pinhole photography, advanced photography, 2-D art, 3-D art, drawing and painting, integrating current events, political and art history, curating group shows in locations such as The King Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Alyssa draws influence from American photographers Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Sally Mann, Annie Leibovitz, and New Zealand photographer Niki Boon. She also became inspired by a workshop with Cheryl Jacobs Nicolai in 2002 to develop her skills in film. It is the combination of fragility and power in our planet and our bodies that inspired Fortin's current work. Three years ago she shifted her work into the production of large format museum quality fine art. Traveling along the New England coast, she shoots on the edge, exploring the female form in liminal spaces - where land and air meet water. Working with ballet dancers and yoga masters, she pushes her subjects to defy gravity, balance through sheer power and will, and then - give in and submerge. It is there, under the water with her dancers, that Fortin taps into something unique, offering a glimpse into another realm. To say that her work captures the female form, in all its strength and grace, as it glides, floats and balances, is to minimize her message. Through her unique visual storytelling in which she resurrects the lost heroines of classical and western tragedies, Fortin has thrown away the lens, pulled us in with her, to witness and experience of all things - hope.

  • Officer's Wives Club - Contemporary, 21st Century, Polaroid, Figurative
    By Stefanie Schneider
    Located in Morongo Valley, CA
Officer's Wives Club (29 Palms, CA), diptych - 1999 Edition of 23/25, 40x40cm each, installed 40x87cm, including gap. 2 Analog C-Prints, hand-printed by the artist, based on the 2 Polaroids. Signed on back with Certificate. Artist inventory number: 316. Mounted on Aluminum with matte UV-Protection. 29 PALMS, CA is a film / art piece that explores and chronicles the dreams and fantasies of a group of individuals who live in a trailer community in the Californian desert. The world depicted in the film is inspired by the photographs of German artist Stefanie Schneider in that it combines the notions of reality and fantasy and explores the resonance of both within a desert landscape and a transient culture. The characters portrayed in the film, (an actress, a singer, a DJ, a motel owner and his wife, a US army soldier, a mystic, a princess, a recluse, a movie ticket seller, two hitchhikers, a doctor, and so on), are to be played by both actors and non-actors. The story is constructed through the interpretation of real-life communications (i.e. phone calls, emails, conversations) that have taken place as the individuals depicted in the story try to make sense of events that have occurred in real life. In this sense, the story is, in part, a biography and social commentary, and the characters are the exaggerated alter egos of the individuals who play them. The structure of the plot is fairly simple. An actress working as a telemarketer is inspired by a singer who is new to town and is featured on the local radio station. The radio station runs a program for lonely hearts and a charismatic DJ uses the show to reveal the hopes and dreams of the town's “hottest women”. One night a panicked German female caller captivates the community with a painful story about a sexy “Smoke Jumper” (a mysterious and super real alpha male). Everybody in town is listening to the program and nobody is quite sure what to say. Life in general continues and we witness and explore the various interactions. The actress meets the singer and they become famous. The US Army soldier dies on his way to battle. The foreign princess discovers that the jewels she has come to sell are fake. The motel owner‘s wife has an affair with the pool boys and so on. All the while the community is united by their loyalty to the “Lonely Hearts” radio show and through the disturbing revelations of the German woman...
