Oil on Board
A large and striking mid century modernist portrait in oil, painted onto board.
With a very distinctive dark sepia tone overall, the rusty reds of this portrait give it great impact. The figure’s gaze, although forward, does not look directly at us. Expressive, gestural brushstrokes can be seen throughout the surface, and layers of interesting colours reveal themselves slowly as we take the time to study the picture. Behind the figure appear several more heads, so we get a sense that she is perhaps standing amongst a crowd, but the artist has chosen her specifically as the protagonist of the painting.
This oil on board is housed in original mid century gilt frame with linen border. The painting and frame are both in excellent vintage condition.
