Nan Hass Feldman's “Friends in the Floating World" is a 28 x 22 x 1.5 inch oil painting on panel in an energetic composition of birds, fans, kimonos, flowers and dolls in deep blue, teal, and black with rich pastels and touches of red. "The Floating World” series is inspired by a visit to Japan. The artist writes, "I loved the gifts which I bought for my two granddaughters: fans, kimono coasters, fish and plant handkerchiefs, and some lovely postcards. In this painting I also reference Japan’s Edo period, a time of elegance and beauty. This painting with its colorful patterning and detail is meant to be joyful and invite you into my made-up world."
Nan Hass Feldman has been a full-time artist for over 40 years. Her works, whether Landscapes or Interiors are interpreted through her screen of selective seeing, playful detail, heightened color, and bits of fantasy. Nan’s work is always vibrantly colorful, intricate, enlivening, and upbeat. For Nan, art really is about enhancing and interpreting reality to create a more optimistic and joyous world. Nan’s work has been collected in seven countries, holds a BFA, MA, MFA degrees, teaches in three art museums. She is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.

Nan Hass Feldman
Nan Hass Feldman has been an artist and art instructor for more than four decades. While teaching at museums and universities over the years, Feldman continued to paint non-stop — even when those opportunities included an “Artist Loft” aboard a cruise ship and leading painting retreats in various countries around the world.
Feldman began taking art classes at the Brooklyn Museum with her sister for years, beginning when she was very young. By the time she was in her teens, Feldman decided to commit to pursuing a life in art. She holds a BFA, an MA, and an MFA in painting and began working as an art teacher at an elementary school before having her daughter, Rebecca.
Feldman became the first art instructor at the Danforth Museum in Framingham, Massachusetts. She primarily worked for two other museums including the Worcester Art Museum and the DeCordova Museum while developing her style — her richly colorful and playful landscapes, whether they’re her oil paintings or her acrylics, are creatively composed and see a mix of Expressionist and abstract influences.
Feldman has had over 50 solo exhibitions and 50 group shows including 28 museum exhibitions. Her work has been widely collected in five countries and is held in the collections of corporations such as Fidelity Investments, Meditech and Veryfine Products.
Feldman’s awards include fellowships from the Worcester Art Museum, the Basil H. Alkazzi National Acquisition Award, the Liquitex Fine Art Achievement Award and the Massachusetts Arts and Humanities Foundation Commission from the Museum Without Walls. Feldman’s work has been covered in the Boston Globe magazine and Fidelity magazine.

His brightly-colored, light-infused, ornamental compositions bring together aspects of many modernist art movements including Fauvism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and abstraction. Della-Volpe first studied painting at the prestigious National Academy of Design before joining the Army during World War II. As a soldier, the artist saw action on Utah Beach, winning a Purple Heart, and his experiences undoubtedly affected his later artistic style. The Fauvist "coloristic exuberance" found in the works beginning in the mid 1960's, with their vibrant fuschias and yellows, seem to offset what could be an otherwise solemn tone to many of his works at the time. Upon his return from military service, Della-Volpe’s style evolved significantly. In the years following the second world war, his work was solemn, imbued with a quiet darkness. Over time, this darkness faded: by the 1950s, influenced by his time at the Art Students League, his oeuvre was overtaken by the tenants of Abstract Expressionism. Paintings from this period boast bold brushwork, energetic compositions, and strong color. Although the next decade saw Della-Volpe trade expressionist abstraction for figuration, his love of color continued to shine through his work.Della-Volpe took a teaching position as the first artist-in-residence at Bennett College in Millbrook, New York where he remained for 28 years, serving as chairman of the Art Department for most of that time. Obviously influenced by impressionism 's preoccupation with the treatment of light, Della-Volpe's own works have a "faultless tonal quality, with its sense of failing light—the areas of silvery gray deepening into rosy tans" (Arts Magazine. "In the Galleries". 1960). Della-Volpe has exhibited widely throughout his career and has lectured on art at colleges, universities, and galleries across the country.
