Harvey Otis Young
Native American Encampment, western scene

1874

About the Item

This rare and impressive depiction of a white capped mountain and Indian encampment from the 1870's is a great image for a library or rustic room. Exquisitely painted, Young focused on Western views from Colorado to San Francisco. The exact location of this is still to be determined as it could be a Mountain range north of San Francisco where Young searched for Gold or Colorado - perhaps along the Merced River in Yosemite too. He was known to do landscapes in all of these regions. This scene has strong light and movement with the clouds overhead. It is framed in an exceptional hand carved, high quality Hudson River school frame with 22 Karat gold. This artist had a great career, exhibited many important places including the National academy of design, the Paris Salon, the Pennsylvania Academy of Art and the Denver Art Association. The dimensions given are the total framed dimension and the canvas inside measures 17 x 30 inches.

  • Sunyata, A Coastal scene
    Located in Greenwich, CT
A coastal scene, Sunyata is painted with a unique intensity. The painting itself measures 42 x 64 inches so other dimension is framed. In a lovely wood stained frame. Through this intensity, Sarah has found expression for a range of moods that encompass the whole human condition—awe, grief, anger, and joy are all represented here in haunting forms. These are the emotions that inspired the work and they are expressed metaphorically and spiritually, directly and indirectly in her works: her awe at the beauty of the natural world touched by the hand of the divine; her anger at the willful destruction of our planet and its resources; her grief in the form of a wave crashing against rocks; and her joy and exhilaration as sunlight bursts through the branches of a willow tree. Sunyata was directly inspired by lines from Keats’ “When I have Fears:” Then on the shore Of the wide world I stand alone, and think Till love and fame to nothingness do sink Signed: Gillespie lower right Marked: Sarah Gillespie...

Autumn Idle, Catskills, New York, October 23, 1885 By. Jervis McEntee (American, 1828-1891) Unframed: 11.5" x 16" Framed: 20.5" x 25" Jervis McEntee was a landscape painter, born in 1828 in the Hudson River Valley in Rondout, New York. It was said that 'Nostalgia may well have been McEntee's middle name", and that he, always attempting to stir emotions in his viewers, often attached poetry to his paintings when exhibiting them. At a time when the Civil War and its after effects caused great disruption in America, McEntee's work may have provided a visual escape for the more educated. His works are rich with the colors of autumn and winter, and he, who often painted in the Catskill Mountains, preferred smaller views rather than panoramas. Usually detailed and simple, his works often reflect a sense of loneliness. As a youngster, McEntee would play in his parents attic, pretending it was an art studio. An unsuccessful attempt at business led McEntee back into the art profession where he studied in New York City under the influence of Frederic E. Church, master of the Hudson River Style, and soon had a showing of his own in the famous Tenth Street Studio Building by 1855. In about 1858, Mr. and Mrs. McEntee hired English architect Calvert Vaux to build a studio next to McEntee's fathers house in Rondout. There Jervis would spend most of his summers, painting the nearby Catskill Mountains, and returning to the city during the winter. At the outbreak of the Civil War, McEntee enlisted in the Union...
